ANAHEIM — Long before the Dodgers drew three straight walks with the bases loaded, maybe even before Monday’s game started, Angels right fielder Kole Calhoun was ready for the regular season to begin.

Calhoun hit Kenta Maeda’s first pitch for a home run in the Dodgers’ 8-7 win over the Angels before an announced crowd of 32,029 at Angel Stadium. Later, he threw out Joc Pederson at second base trying to extend a single.

“It’s been a good spring,” said Calhoun, who is hitting .333 (16 for 48) with two home runs, five doubles and a triple. “Spring sometimes can get kind of long out here and we’re ready to play somebody for real, so definitely nice to feel good right now.”

The Angels (15-15-4) and the Dodgers (13-15-3) have one head-to-head exhibition game remaining Tuesday night at Dodger Stadium. After a day off Wednesday, they’ll play 162 games that count beginning Thursday.

Monday was Maeda’s final tuneup for the regular season. The right-hander allowed three runs in three innings. Manager Dave Roberts was hoping to send Maeda back out for a fourth inning, but he instead removed him after a 44-pitch outing.

Nine of those pitches were thrown to Mike Trout in the third inning. Maeda quickly got ahead 0-and-2, only to see Trout hit a series of foul balls before he lined a single to right field on a 3-and-2 pitch. It was the fifth and final hit he allowed. Maeda didn’t walk a batter and struck out two.

“Coming back in California, Arizona was a little dryer, so adjusting all my pitches into a different environment, that was my main focus,” Maeda said through his interpreter.

The Angels successfully “bullpenned” their way through the first six innings. Only closer Cody Allen ran into trouble. Pitching the second inning, he walked Cody Bellinger and allowed an RBI double to Chris Taylor before David Freese punched a single through a drawn-in infield.

Thanks to Calhoun’s home run, an RBI single by David Fletcher in the second inning, and Trout’s RBI single in the third, the Angels took a 3-2 lead. Opener Noe Ramirez, and relievers Ty Buttrey, Luis Garcia, Cam Bedrosian and Justin Anderson each threw a scoreless inning against a lineup of Dodgers major leaguers.

In the seventh inning, as most of the major leaguers on both sides were removed, the game unraveled.

Luke Bard took the ball for the Angels. The Dodgers loaded the bases with one out. Alex Verdugo hit a double down the right-field line. Edwin Rios was hit by a pitch. Corey Seager drew a walk.

The next batter was Jeter Downs, a middle infield prospect whom the Dodgers acquired from Cincinnati in a December trade. Downs, 20, finished last season with the Reds’ low Single-A affiliate. Bard began last season in the majors. Bard walked Downs, allowing Verdugo to trot home from third base with the Dodgers’ third run.

Tied at 3, Luis Peña relieved Bard. He struck out Jeren Kendall, walked Bellinger to force in another run, then walked Matt Beaty – on four pitches – to give the Dodgers a 5-3 lead. Another minor leaguer, Connor Wong, drove a two-run single to center field, making it 7-3. The inning mercifully ended when the Angels’ third pitcher of the inning, Matt Ball, struck out Dodgers catcher Will Smith.

Verdugo tagged Ball for an RBI double in the eighth inning, putting the Dodgers ahead 8-3.

The Angels loaded the bases in the ninth inning against Dodgers pitcher Jordan Sheffield. Luis Rengifo and Bo Way singled, and Cesar Puello was hit by a pitch. Rengifo scored when Sheffield threw a wild pitch to the backstop. After another walk loaded the bases, Sheffield was removed in favor of Parker Curry.

Jared Walsh promptly cleared the bases with a double, bringing the Angels within 8-7. But Curry struck out Matt Thaiss and got Tommy La Stella to ground out, ending the game.

Verdugo and Taylor had two of the Dodgers’ 10 hits. Bellinger drew three of the Dodgers’ 10 walks.
