OC Register: Angels’ Jared Walsh flashes two-way capabilities in come-from-behind tie

THE GAME: The Angels scored six runs in the ninth to forge a 9-9 tie against the Seattle Mariners on Sunday at Tempe Diablo Stadium, with two-way player Jared Walsh impacting the game as a pitcher and hitter.

Walsh walked three batters and was charged with three runs, but then he moved from the mound to first base. He came up in the bottom of the ninth and yanked the game-tying double. Walsh said he didn’t know when he came in to pitch that he’d stay in to hit, but he was happy for the chance to redeem himself.

“I’m really disappointed (with the walks), I need to attack the zone a little more,” he said. “I was very fortunate for that opportunity to come up in the last inning.”

It was the first time this spring the Angels had used a player to pitch and hit in the same game.

PITCHING REPORT: LHP Dillon Peters, who got the start because Tyler Skaggs was scratched, shut out the Mariners on three hits over four innings. He became the first Angels pitcher to go four innings yet this spring. Peters, acquired from the Marlins over the winter, has allowed one earned run in 10 innings. He figures to start the season at Triple-A and be one of the first candidates to replace a starter in the majors… Noé Ramírez was charged with four runs. He recorded just two outs.

HITTING REPORT: David Fletcher doubled and scored the Angels’ first run on a Kole Calhoun single into right field. Fletcher, who came into camp as a leading candidate to win an everyday job, is 3 for 25 this spring… Tommy La Stella had a pair of hits, including a double… Jarrett Parker poked a ground ball into right field to get a single against a shifted infield… José Briceño hit his first homer of the spring… Cesar Puello started off the Angels’ ninth with a two-run homer.

DEFENSE REPORT: 1B Albert Pujols played five innings, handling all the makeable plays and moving as well as expected. It was the second time Pujols had played the field this spring. The Angels are bringing him along slowly after he had two surgeries last year… C Jonathan Lucroy made a nice catch of a foul pop against the railing of the dugout… RF Puello nearly made a spectacular diving catch to retire the side with the bases loaded, but the ball popped out of his glove, allowing three runs to score.
