Thankfully I've never had any surgery but I assume the doctor shows you everything that they will be doing prior to whatever surgery you're having. That makes sense to me.

prior to my bariatric surgery, i met with my doctor a couple of times to discuss the surgery. i was required to attend a nutrition class in his office with a nutritionist. i was required to undergo a psych evaluation with a staff psychologist. i was required to attend at least one support group meeting. i knew full well ahead of time what i was getting into. this is standard for anyone getting this surgery.

and yet, day after day on any of the bariatric support groups i follow on facebook, there are always people who say things like "how soon can i resume drinking soda?" "when do we get to eat pizza again?" "i'm having second thoughts after hearing some stories." With all the information that's out there, there are still people who don't do their due diligence to educate themselves about what they're going to go through.

i have no issue requiring anyone who wants to have an abortion to go through a similar process.

You do not want to live with the consequences of a transplanted organ. The anti rejection medication is a pain in the ass to get right so you don't feel nausea all the time.

My mom was a kidney recipient (from my brother). She does take a bunch of meds but she has done very well and it's been like 10 years. it was either that or death. As far as medication complications, I don't think she's had any issues but I think that may be because it was a familial donor

Especially for any surgery that is considered elective. Obviously emergency procedures are different. Personally, I try to be as informed as a I can with anything in terms of my body. Luckily my younger sister is an MD so I pick her brain a lot. Honestly, I have no idea what education a woman receives prior to having an abortion. Maybe it is explained to them prior

My father in law had a liver transplant. It extended his life 8 years. The entire time he was on a dozen meds a day and some had to be modified.

Read somewhere a study is being done on genetically engineering new organs through the patients samples. Simple tissues have been generated but building a working liver or kidney is beyond their abilities so far. One day this may be a resource to replace donor organs.

Do you really see things so black-and-white? Can we not have progressive and conservative views, to varying degrees and depending upon context?

I don't see myself as that black and white.  However do you know of any progressive politicians that are not super strongly pro choice?

good to have you back AJ.

Thanks.

It is hard to say what any politician actually believes as they have to cater to their base. But I don't see why a progressive politician can't put limitations on abortion. It isn't all or nothing.

I personally am quite progressive politically, as you know, at least economically (I'm pretty much "left libertarian," not "left collectivist" like many progressives and the SJW/identity politics types). But I have extreme reservations about abortion, mostly because I just don't feel comfortable drawing a line at which it is OK before but not after. We simply don't know enough.

Having experienced just about every variation of pregnancy with my now ex-wife--abortion, miscarriages, and two daughters--I can personally say from experience that abortion is a very traumatic experience, one that I hope I will never go through again. We had an abortion when we first met--in our 20s--and children years later, and especially after falling in love with my kids and feeling the loss of miscarriage, I feel a certain sadness--if not regret--for the abortion.

Sorry to hear you guys divorced. Hope it was somewhat amicable

Thanks. It is mostly amicable. Some bumps here and there, but we get along and are even kind of friends. I didn't want the separation at the time but am better for it (not least because I lost 80+ lbs!) and am greatly enjoying post-marital life. I made a decision early on to work through the shit rather than try to lash out at her, mostly because research shows that the best way you can minimize trauma to your kids is to have an amicable co-parenting relationship. Therapy helped! Anyhow, she's engaged and pregnant and her fiancee is a good guy - someone I feel good about being around my daughters. Plus the fact that he's shorter and less good looking than I am doesn't hurt! (Not sure about penis size, though...maybe some things are best left unknown).

Just kidding AJ.  Good to have you back on the MAGA Appreciation Board.

Now, I don’t want to shock you but AngelsForLife went full Bernie to full Trumper one day, without explanation. And we’re all supposed ro act like that’s normal and his contributions are still valid.  I know, that’s bananas.

Oh and AF25(Brian) is back and has a vagina.

It’s really a very exciting time!

Did you grab him by it? That's all that matters to me.

My brother-in-law had a liver transplant a few months ago. Blarg is right. The anti rejection medication, which he will take every day for the rest of his life, is a bear to adjust to.
