OC Register: Report: Angels nearing deal with closer Cody Allen

Recommended Posts

The Angels might have found a closer.

The club is closing in on a one-year deal with former Cleveland Indians closer Cody Allen, according to Ken Rosenthal of the Athletic. The deal was reportedly pending a physical.

Terms of the deal are unknown, but Allen made $10.5 million with the Indians last season.

The Angels have not confirmed the deal.

Allen, 30, had 149 saves for the Indians over his seven-year career, averaging 29 saves a season for the past five seasons. He has a career 2.98 ERA.

Last season, however, Allen’s performance slipped to the tune of a career-worst 4.70 ERA and a career-high five blown saves. In his previous five full seasons, he never had an ERA higher than 2.99.

If the Allen deal is finalized, the Angels would have an experienced closer to join a bullpen that has plenty of potential in terms of hard throwers who can rack up strikeouts, but without an established closer.

Ty Buttrey, Hansel Robles, Justin Anderson, Luis Garcia and newly acquired John Curtiss all throw in the mid-90s or harder, as does Keynan Middleton, who is expected back from Tommy John surgery around midseason. The Angels also figure to have Cam Bedrosian, Taylor Cole and Noé Ramirez in the bullpen mix.

Allen has averaged 10.5 strikeouts per nine innings throughout his career, throwing a fastball around 93-95 mph and a curve.
