OC Register: Angels acquire hard-throwing reliever John Curtiss from Twins

Recommended Posts

The Angels acquired another hard-throwing reliever with a penchant for strikeouts when they picked up right-hander John Curtiss from the Minnesota Twins in exchange for minor league infielder Daniel Ozoria on Tuesday.

The Angels designated Parker Bridwell for assignment to clear a spot on the 40-man roster for Curtiss.

Curtiss, 25, has pitched 15 innings for the Twins over the past two seasons, with 17 strikeouts. He has allowed 12 runs.

In the minors, Curtiss has a career 2.94 ERA over five seasons, with 306 strikeouts in 251 innings. Curtiss has thrown as hard as 99 mph in the majors, and he averaged 94 mph in his brief big league stint last season.

General Manager Billy Eppler has said often that he is looking for pitchers who have big strikeout numbers and throw hard, as well as those who induce ground balls. It was the recipe that led the Angels to pick up Luis Garcia earlier this offseason.

Curtiss has options, which makes him particularly valuable to the Angels.

Ozoria, 18, hit .222 with a .293 on-base percentage in two minor league seasons, both at rookie ball.

Bridwell was designated for assignment for the third time this offseason, twice by the Angels. The Yankees claimed him and DFA’d him in between.
