The Angels have agreed to a minor-league deal with Alex Meyer, reuniting with a pitcher they had released earlier this winter.

Meyer, 28, had shoulder surgery in September 2017, and a setback in his rehab in October 2018. Shortly after that, the Angels let him go to clear a spot on the 40-man roster.

Now, Meyer is still unable to throw until mid February. If he can return healthy, he would offer the Angels the promise of a former top prospect.

Meyer was considered one of the game’s best pitching prospects when he was with the Minnesota Twins, but a series of injuries derailed his career. The Angels picked him up in the Hector Santiago trade in July 2016. He has started 18 games for the Angels in parts of two seasons, posting a 3.74 ERA and 10.0 strikeouts per nine innings.

His last game before getting hurt was, coincidentally, the best game of his big league career. He pitched seven scoreless innings, allowing one hit, against the Washington Nationals on July 19, 2017.
