Griffin Canning and Jose Suarez

Fletcher tweeted that we can expect both of them up at some point next season which makes the Harvey and Cahill deals a lot more understandable. Eppler and co. have to be really high on both. I keep seeing reports that Canning tops out as a mid-rotation arm but I honesty see a 1 or 2. As for Suarez I’m higher on him than I am Barria and see him as a mid-rotation guy. In my opinion, their development this season is more important than Adell’s.

Suarez's stuff is better than Barria's, but Barria has better pitch ability and mound demeanor. The end result is likely a left handed version of Barria himself, which is a #4 starter.

Canning though, he's just on a whole other level. The very best comp I can think of for him is Trevor Bauer.

Both are going to make the Angels better, the only question is if they'll end up sacrificing Barria or Suarez for more upside in the future, which I don't believe they should, but theoretically could.

Not doubting Canning's future but why would Angels invite Saurez to 2019 major league spring training but have not decided yet whether Canning would be. Eppler was quoted stating this recently in mlb trade rumors article (about Bourjos & 7 others signed minor league contracts).

Because Canning is not on the 40 man roster and Suarez is

That answers Saurez but why isn't Canning a for sure invite since he seems close to being a part of the Angels? Seems odd they wouldn't want him there for the experience

have they announced ANY of the non roster invitees yet?   I haven't seen it listed yet other than passing mentions of guys signed to minor league contracts.

I think they both get 5-10 starts in Anaheim this year, but are more likely to be part of the rotation in 2020 and beyond. Suarez is possibly trade bait.

I couls ee the 2020 six-man rotation being Ohtani, Skaggs, Heaney, Canning, Barria, Suarez. Or one of Barria/Suarez is traded, and insert one of the two Penas, Dillon Peters, Patrick Sandoval, or even Luis Madero. By 2021 you can factor in Aaron Hernandez, Kyle Bradish, Jose Soriano, and Chris Rodriguez as possible starters to replace Skaggs (in 2021) and Heaney (in 2022).

I'm guessing we can guess the majority of non-roster invitees. Peter Bourjos, Matt Thaiss, Jared Walsh, Bo Way, Griffin Canning, Jahmai Jones, Brennon Lund, Luis Pena, Pat Sandoval, Jose Rojas, Brett Hanewich and Jo Adell.

Peter Bourjos doesn’t really count in that group since he’s a guy signed to a minor league contract. There are about 5-6 others like him. Dustin Garneau, etc.

you all are going to see plenty of canning in ST, then he'll get sent down and will eventually make some starts in anaheim during the regular season. after ST, how much you see of him will depend monumentally on what kind of season the angels are having, and what kind of season canning is having. there you go, mystery solved.

That's a lot of guessing
