Typical hard candy caramel that's really just brown sugar melted down. Not a fan. 

What I am a fan of is sticky, gooey caramel sauce poured over popcorn that forces you to lick your fingers after pulling goobs of this stuff from a bowl. You need napkins, you need a group of friends of family to share it with. 

If you have an old version of Better Homes Cookbook printed in the 50's there is a recipe for caramel popcorn that includes butter, brown sugar, Kayro corn syrup, vanilla and condensed milk. 

That is real caramel popcorn, not some crap that can probably sit in a plastic bag for three years and still not reach a half life point.
