Trade ... what’s it going to take?

ive seen this name a lot lately, and i kinda wonder why.  He hasnt played more than 104 games but once in his career.   Good numbers but man oh man that history of injuries and concusions etc... kinda scares me.

OBP, decent offense, decent defense, former Yankee, expiring contract...checks a lot of Eppler boxes.

yeah i get the numbers, but its hard to ignore the lack of games played

100 games and 400 plate appearances the last four seasons...that doesn't seem that concerning. Slashing .270/.368/.384/.752 in that time, 105 OPS+, 2 WAR annually.
His CS% dramatically increased last year...39% after three straight years hovering around 20%.

Relying on Smith/Briceno for the other 60 may be a little dicey. Smith's offensive potential is interesting, and Briceno impressed me, but they still may need to bring in another Rene Rivera-esque back-up and see if Smith sneaks past waivers into AAA to really make sure we're covered.

exactly, a little dicey, but exactly what you have to do if you go that route.  Goon numbers when on the firld just not someone that appears capable of being an every day starter missing 40% of most seasons.

The Angels typically don't have Catchers catch as much as you are saying you want. Granted it's under Ausmus, not Scioscia, but Catching does take a toll on the body. Iannetta was the last catcher to start more than 100 games for the Angels before Maldonado did in 2017.

It's just not common.

Cervelli, or Ramos, or Grandal should be the next.

Cervelli,  33 in March, just wrapped up a vastly superior offensive season to Martin and is owed a more palatable $11.5MM in 2019 before reaching free agency next winter. That price point is obviously steep for the typically low-budget Pirates, but other clubs around the league may not consider it excessive for a player who hit .259/.378/.431 with a career-high 12 home runs in 404 plate appearances last season. That OBP is hardly anything new for Cervelli, who has reached at a .370 clip or better in five of the past six seasons, with a .342 mark in 2017 serving as the lone exception.

Cervelli also halted an outstanding 39 percent of stolen-base attempts against him.

We need a catcher who can hit .250 with a .335 OBP. a .400 SLG would be nice as well. I'm all for having an awesome stud defensive catcher who saves a lot of runs with his arm and his pitch framing, pitch calling etc. But if he can't hit, they may as well just have kept Jeff Mathis all these years.

The Angels do not have as productive of an offensive team as the Red Sox or Astros to have a black hole offensively in the catcher spot.

But the Angels dont have enough money to fix every black hole in their lineup. A defensive catcher is more important than sacrificing offense for defense at other positions. Catchers who do both are rare..........and expensive.

Games are won by either scoring more runs than the opponent or limiting them to fewer runs than you can score. Catchers limit runs better than any other position, outside of pitchers.

Maldonado coming back  would be great, IMO. But Arte will want to go even cheaper.
