Updates on some young Dominican players

Recommended Posts

The Angels biggest signings from last year, outfielders Nataneal Delgado and Ricky Martinez, are going to skip the DSL and start in the AZL.  They had a good showing in instructs and the Angels think they are ready to start stateside.  Very rare.

Delgado was given the biggest bonus in the past few years back in 2012, about 280K.  Big left handed power.

Martinez is slightly less polished but the better centerfielder and more athletic.

Hard to believe our biggest Dominican bonus baby for a few years now has been only 280K.  Dating back to 2009, any of them that were worth anything and were found to be legitimately the right age were going for 500K+.  It's a good thing they're building a new complex and setting up a more permanent shop down there.  Maybe next time a Miguel Sano comes through the Angels can sign him.

Exactly, and it's a HUGE indictment of the org that the biggest bonus going back several years is just $280k.

What happened to the org that signed Santana and K-Rod for 2-3 times that MORE THAN A DECADE BACK?

Not to mention signing Morales close to a decade back?

This is on Arte!

"While every team received a $2.9 million international bonus pool for the current 2012-13 signing period, the 2013-14 international pools are based on reverse order of 2012 winning percentage, which means the Astros will have the most amount of money to spend, and the Nationals the least."

2013-2014 INTERNATIONAL BONUS SLOTS for Angels

Slot 21 Value $534,000

Slot 51 Value $360,500

Slot 81 Value $243,500

Slot 111 Value $155,700

2013-14 INTERNATIONAL BONUS POOLS

Total

21. Angels $1,993,700

"In addition to its international signing bonus pool, each club is allowed to sign six players for bonuses of $50,000 or less that will not count against its pool, the same way each team is allowed to do so during the current signing period. Any signing bonus of $10,000 or less will also be exempt from a team’s bonus pool, an increase from the $7,500 bonus exemptions in place currently."

I thought the Angels didn't have any foriegn presence. Or at least that's what we've been told, over and over and over...

You were told correctly.

Didn't the new CBA limit the amount total and on bonuses for international signings?

Which is why teams that were interested in their farm systems spent through the nose in advance of the changes.  Much like the Angels did prior to MLB doing away with draft and follow picks.

The rule changes aren't an excuse, they are an indictment.

But did it cut back the max signing amount that much, to just say 1/3 of what Santana and K-Rod signed for over a decade back?

Those changes went into play THIS YEAR.   This is why the Cubs paid heavy for Jorge Soler, and the Dodgers went ape after Puig.   Soler is busy putting up a 890 OPS at age 21 in the FSL.  Thats like a 1.100 OPS in the Cal League.  Puig is at .950 in the Southern Lg., another pitcher friendly circuit.

Either of those guys would be our best position player prospect -- Puig's athleticism is so far off the charts its borderline stupid.

  • 1 month later...

Updates from my Dominican contact:

  • Outfielder Ayendy Perez in the DSL (19 yrs old) is really impressing. Got likened to Endy Chavez with his build and speed.  There is a possibility of him finishing out the season in the AZL but he most likely will come stateside in '14 as a 20 yr old.
  • Mario Martinez (16) was the 3rd biggest signing for us last year.  REALLY advanced approach at the plate but his D behind the plate right now is (understandably) very raw.  Probably another year in the DSL next year unless he shows more in instructs next spring.  Keep this name in mind.
  • Jose Rodriguez. Reliever, 17. Looks like a twig but knows how to pitch.  High 80s FB with devastating slider.  Name I got: K-Rod.

*keep in mind this is an Angels guy so he might be slightly biased but still valuable info nonetheless.

Slap this contact in the face...  Unless he's trying to say he reminds him of the current version of K-Rod.   The one that doesn't walk people and create his own messes

Krod was throwing mid 90s as a 17 year old.   I'm sure he's talking about the slider being like K-Rod, but it seems like a poor comparison.   Krod minus the FB was really rather unimpressive the last few years.
