They are choosing to treat an all time great with dignity at the end of his career while having another all time great in his prime on the team who is seeing how he will be treated if he chooses to sign an extension.

We also have no idea what kind of conversations they’ve had with Albert about his future.

I just want to make a small point about one dimensional 1B/DH players.

During the Phillies' heyday between 2006 and 2011 Ryan Howard averaged .369/.559/.929 +139 and won an MVP and finished top 10 every year. He accumulated 16.2 BWAR in that time

Jimmy Rollins accumulated 22.7 (with an MVP of his own) and Chase Utley 42 BWAR for a good bit less money and no crippling follow-on contract. So would you rather have a Ryan Howard or a Pearce/Moreland platoon and the extra spending cash?

we all know that pujols is going to play unless he's injured.

if you sign cron, he takes away at bats from ohtani, not pujols.

Utley played primarily 2nd base. Rollins at shortstop. Both positions can generate a higher WAR total because of being middle infield.

Regardless of that, they weren't playing first base and somebody had to. Howard earned his salary up to 2011, it was based on buying out his arbitration years and making him a lifetime player for the Phil's. His production in the first half of his contract was in line with production.

Similar to many players of that time period like Evan Longoria that received a lifetime contract but his production fell off the table at age 31 with 6 more seasons left to go.

Current boat anchor contract is Giancarlo Stanton with 10 more years and instead of reaping the benefits of a hitters park, Stanton's OPS plus was exactly the same as Howard's at age 31. Stanton is only 28. This could go bad for the Yankees really quick.

Would I take Howards best stretch at 16.2 bWar for 20 million over what we have going forward? Hell yes.

Would we noticed a drop off in production if we took on Howard's last half of his contract over what we have now? Nope, he was still better than Pujols is now and for less money.

Would I want the last scenario, hell no but we also don't have a choice. So Howard's career is not really relevant as would be a Pearce/Moreland platoon. We've got Pujols.

I wasn't really aiming to compare it to the Angels directly but in general how a guy who's utterly useless unless he's standing in the batters box can be deceptively less valuable than the team's more versatile players. Even more boat anchor than Stanton is Miggy, who was considered a franchise player pretty recently. Sure you can make an exception if you have Miggy/Albert/Votto in their prime if it means they sign instead of bailing once they become FA eligible but the bar has to be pretty high to make them worth the long term money

It’s because it’s the Rays and they don’t want to pay the relatively cheap price for a 1B/ DH type.   That’s fine, but the Angels have been massively hemorrhaging money at those positions for years for near league worst production.  Cron works/would have worked great for us.

Albert is the gift that keeps giving !
