no.

if he makes less money on the back end, he would benefit from opting out

Back loaded....Agreement or arrangement in which the heavier charges are levied, or greater benefits accrue, towards the end of its duration or term. Opposite of front Loaded.

I know what backloaded means.

You might want to read the posts again carefully and try to follow along.

What am I missing?

the benefit would be him being able to make more on a subsequent free agent deal if he opts out (in comparison to what would remain on his original deal if that contract were to pay him less on the back end)

If we were going to pursue Harper then I'd want it to be where he'd almost have to opt out after 3 or 4 years.  But that ain't gonna happen because the amount of money he'd cost would limit our ability to get pitching and his value wouldn't offset our needs in other areas assuming we'd stick to our current budget.

does anyone actually believe there's a chance in hell we'll sign Harper?

Not really.   But the thpughy of having Trout and Harper hitting back to back is just electric.

Long term deals rarely work out but that is normally because they are usually starting at age 31ish (like Pujols).

I would not have an inch of complaint about the Pujols contract if it had started at his age 27 season.  The contract would have included those monster seasons and itvwoukd have been over prior to last season.

So the Pujols experience with the Angels is not a reason to shy away from one of these younger guys.

Not saying it is smart and saying it would work out great.  You don't know.  But the age difference is HUGE.

shifting Albert's contract to start at his age 27 season means we'd have gotten him in his 3rd year for the cards.  ?

It would absolutely have to involve an opt-out after his 2nd year, perhaps even his 1st year. You'd want him off the books sooner rather than later for it to make sense financially. Otherwise pass on it unless the Angels know that Trout is leaving at the end of his current contract.
