Is it true that the Angels only give up a draft pick if the player attached only signs for over 50M? If so, why not go get Keuchel for 3/36 with incentives to reach 49M?

With his hits allowed, even $12 million/season for 3 years seems to be an overpayment.

Someone brought up a question to be addressed, which might influence this.

Is it true that now if a FA signs for a total of under $50 million, there is no draft pick lost?

The Angels are better off seeing how they look and increasing payroll for a better pitcher at the deadline if they’re in the hunt then giving up a pick and a multi year contract to Keuchel.
