Would Castellanos' offense overcome his defense in RF enough, compared to what Calhoun would give them overall?

With the right bench, he could switch to 1B late in game with a defensive specialist replacing him at RF.

Could also explore putting him back at 3B and moving Cozart to 2B, keeping Calhoun in RF, and going over budget by $10m. May cost less in prospects, but if DET's asking price is one top prospect, that doesn't really leave much room for them to come down from that demand.

What about Calhoun + one of the aforementioned prospects (Thaiss, Ward, Rengifo) for Castellanos, put him at 3B, and then sign a cheap stopgap RF (Robbie Grossman for offense, Cameron Maybin for defense? Both?) and hope Adell storms in by May?

You have Simmons covering nearby, Cozart and perhaps Fletcher able to move over late in game for defense with Castellanos replacing Bour/Pujols at 1B.

Attention Harper, Machado, and Keuchel….MLB owners are no longer throwing away big money on inconsistent hitting, doucheness, or becoming a hits machine on the mound.

DEAL WITH IT!   SIGN WITH SOMEONE!  Got it?  Good!

I was thinking Harper and Machado may sign shorter deals and then be free agents again at 30 years old.  They could sign shorter deals at a higher amount per year.  Didn't Cespedes do something like that a few years ago?

they can accomplish the same thing with a long-term contract with opt outs

I could see the Padres signing him, then possibly trading for a Kluber type to lead their rotation.

They have a deep farm system. Tatis Jr. could move to 3B as his bat plays up anywhere and has already seen some time there in the minors.

Edit: I just noticed they signed Kinsler to play 2B, they have Urias at SS, Myers at 3B (though they could move him back to the OF).

Looking at the Padres depth chart, they sure have a bunch of moving pieces. Surprised they haven't signed any FA pitchers or made a trade for one yet. Their #1 starter is a sophomore in Lucchesi.

Erlin missed pretty much two seasons (2016-17).

The old fart in me makes me think back to a similarly sounding last name pitcher for the Padres in the 1970s, pitcher Steve Arlin.    Tank would like him, pitched for aOSU in the 1965 CWS and 1966 CWS, losing to a Monday/Bando led ASU in the 1965 final, and winning the CWS title in 1966.

At this point it seems like it has to be that they haven't gotten offers anywhere near what they were hoping for.

I believe that for Machado.  I think Harper is sitting on 300m from the Nats and Phils.  It's not what he was hoping for but I don't think it's way off.

The Nats made the offer, Harper refused. I don't think that contract is in play. I think the Phillies know this and are well under that.

Machado made his bed in the World Series. That eliminated any 10 year deal.

I would normally agree about the nats deal for Harper, but my guess is that Boras and Ted Lerner have something cooking behind the scenes with the original deal still out there.

I have thought all along that he would re-up with the Nats....we’ll see....

So we’ve heard or Chuck heard and I kinda heard that the Angels kicked the tires on Machado early on in free agency.   So the Angels at least had some level of interest.  Since I’m sure the asking price is less than most anticipated, you don’t have to squint too hard to see the Angels may still have interest.   Sure they’ve spent a good chunk of change this off season, but it’s all one year commitments.  Just a thought.   I’ll wait for blarg to tell me to shut up.

Not that I’m hoping for this praticularly or think this is praticularly going to happen BUT I don’t think we will have a “budget” for the “right” player. Like the old saying “you need to spend money to make money.”

I think the Angels will sign Machado. I base that on no inside information, but consider this:

If the Angels were indeed "kicking the tires" early this off-season as per Chuck and Scotty, then surely they were doing so without being completely stupid; they obviously didn't think they could get him for 3/39 or some shit. Remember back in the beginning of the off-season people were predicting 10/300 or more for Machado.

The Angels have a gaping hole at 3rd. Could Ward be the future there? Maybe. Could Cozart be a solid stopgap until Arrenado hits the market? Maybe. But the Angels have a whole lot of "Maybes" in the infield next year. Machado would solve one of those. Plus, can you image a left side of Simmons and Machado? RIP any groundball hit to that side.

Also, Eppler's comments regarding Cody Allen and the budget are a bit odd. When does Eppler ever really talk about the budget? Why say that at all? Seems like it could be a ploy to tell other teams they are out on a certain guy....

Finally, the market has seemingly crashed for him. It seems almost certain he won't be getting a 10 year deal at this point. Hell, maybe Eppler can come in with a 6/180 offer and tell Machado he gets to cash out now, and then again in 6 years as a 32 year old ala Pujols.
