OC Register: Angels pick up catching depth by claiming Kevan Smith on waivers

Recommended Posts

The Angels claimed catcher Kevan Smith on waivers on Friday, adding depth to a position at which they had little experience on the roster.

Smith presumably goes into the mix with Francisco Arcia and José Briceño, neither of whom had played in the majors before last season.

Smith, 30, has played 146 games over the last three years with the White Sox. A right-handed hitter, Smith hit .292 with a .348 on-base percentage in 52 games last season.

If he could repeat that offensive performance, it would be an upgrade for an Angels team that didn’t get much offense out of the catching position in 2018. Angels catchers combined to hit .220 with a .271 on-base percentage last year.

In order to create a spot for Smith on the 40-man roster, the Angels designated catcher Joe Hudson for assignment.
