Met This Guy Yesterday

I was at a celebrity charity bowling tournament sponsored by In N Out yesterday, and Salmon was one of the few celebrities I’ve heard of that were there.  Pretty amazing day where we raised over $300k for people with substance abuse issues.  Tim couldn’t have been a nicer guy, he didn’t seem annoyed when I thanked him for giving my son his wrist bands back in 97.  He asked follow up questions and gave the appearance he really cared, which is a nice humble thing for him to do.  He’s a big dude, huge hands.

He almost didn't become a major league player. He took two beanings to the face in the minor leagues, one broke his nose, the other shattered his jaw. The second required reconstructive surgery and according to his brothers account when he first saw him at the hospital. "I couldn't see any form of his lips," he said. "Marci was passed out on Tim's lap, and there was a suction tube in his mouth so he wouldn't choke when he was sleeping. I bawled for an hour. I thought he'd look like the Elephant Man, that he'd never look normal. . . "

In the lower minors Tim used to do stuff that you never saw in Anaheim. "Guys laugh now because I don't cuss or get mad, but I can remember snapping and throwing all sorts of stuff and using terrible language in Class-A and double-A ball," Salmon said.

"But I finally realized you have to conserve your energy for your next at-bat, that sometimes you can get so frustrated you'll take yourself out of your game. I saw how guys would waste at-bats because they were still so ticked off about their last at-bat."

That is when Salmon started doing his routine that Disarcina referred to as "Timmy World."  He would stick to a very regimented schedule of allowing blocks of time for everything from warm ups to fan interaction but really cut off from the other players in anything not involved with preparing for a game.

Now that his career is being on the television end instead of the players side you get to see and talk to a little more relaxed Tim Salmon. He can smile more, even when stuck taking pictures with our resident burger flipper.

He wasn’t on my bowling team, so I hit him up at the end.   He was so gracious with his time even before I went and chatted him up.  When I walked up he was carrying on a conversation with one of our VPs wives.   He was doing a lot of listening.  She was talking his ear off about real stuff not simply silly fan stuff.  They may have been talking about the event.

I remember going to his final game at the Big A. Everyone in the stadium was standing every time he came to bat hoping that he would hit career home run number 300 that day.

Good guy.  I’ve never really understood the intense love for him.  Good player but nothing great.  I know I’m in the minority in this believe  I just think I was much more of a 70s and 80s fan than a 90s   

I think what we all really want to know is not what you asked him Strad, it’s did he ask you about the INO F grade for its antibiotic meat?

No he didn’t.  He’s smart enough to know that the FDA doesn’t permit antibiotics in meat.

Yes. He could have had 300, but Scioscia distracted him on one of his bowls, so he missed the strike.

Salmon’s rookie year was the year I became an Angel fan. My favorite player by far. Was introduced to his sister at SC and COMPLETELY blew my shot. Apparently she wasn't impressed that her big brother was my favorite player. Stupid fanboy!

I sat behind his wife when Salmon was a rookie. Didn’t know much about him ... she over heard us talking and we talked briefly. That was before the stadium was baseball ️ only .
