They're not going to just give him away, and there won't be a shortage of interest.

He's a year removed from a nearly 6 WAR season with a 3.09 ERA in 201 innings.

Somewhere between the Archer/Gray trades would be a reasonable comp, and those were not cheap deals. They could sit back and hope he has a strong first half and cash him in for quite a bit at the deadline. It'd be a gamble, but with their current batch of young hitters, they can afford to roll the dice.

agree that the cost would be more in line with his 2017 as opposed to his 2018.  If they think he's truly broken then they'll trade him now and get what they can.  Which means you don't want him.  If they think he was dealing with nagging injuries then they'll do what you said and he won't be available till july.

Trades have to be a bit of a perfect storm of scenarios. It has to be enough value that it's makes it worth the Jays while, but also reasonable enough that it makes sense for the Angels.

That's tough to pull off.

The Jays system outside of Guerrero and Bichette is actually pretty weak. Their biggest needs are mostly first base, outfielder, and starting pitcher. The team itself intends to begin competing probably 2022 and beyond, which Stroman doesn't really fit into that time frame. Now obviously they won't sell him if you're paying for someone with an ERA over 5, but also the team that's buying him isn't paying for someone who is very much in the Cy Young conversation like last year.

So the price has to be somewhere in between and fit the Jays needs. They can't expect to get elite prospects in return, but they also can expect to get a collection of prospects that would fill a role when it's time to compete. The prospects probably should be between advanced A and AAA to fit that frame.

They'll ask for Marsh, Thaiss and Canning because that's what he'd have retrieved in 2017.. We'll want to pay Brennon Lund, Jared Walsh and Joe Gatto, which is in line with his 2018 value.

The fair middle ground that should work for both teams...

Jose Soriano, Matt Thaiss and Michael Hermosillo.

This gives the Jays a starting first baseman, a potential starting outfielder or at the very least, a dynamic 4th outfielder, and mid rotation or back end of the bullpen pitcher. Two of them arriving in 2019/2020, the last one in 2021 or 2022.

There's enough upside in that package that the Jays could really benefit, and a high enough floor that they're guaranteed to get some value.

The Angels get away with keeping all their elite prospects, trade the ones that aren't either blocked or are going to get leap frogged, and land themselves what is likely a good #3/4 starter. Best case scenario he's an inexpensive ace, worst case is he's hurt or he's inconsistent and is at the back half of the rotation. Likely middle ground is a mid rotation starter that gives you 180 innings.
