Angels Claim Chris Nelson, Designate Scott Cousins

The Angels have claimed infielder Chris Nelson off waivers from the Yankees and designated outfielder Scott Cousins for assignment, the Angels report (on Twitter). The Yankees designated Nelson for assignment two days ago.

Nelson hit .222/.243/.278 in ten games with the Yankees, who acquired him for a PTBNL or cash after the Rockies designated him for assignment.

Chris Nelson, ss, Born: Sept. 3, 1985 â€¢ B-T: R-R â€¢ Ht: 5-11 â€¢ Wt: 180

 

 

Drafted: HS—Redan, Ga., 2004 (1st round)

 

Background: A two-way star in high school, Nelson concentrated on shortstop after having Tommy John surgery as a junior. The Georgia state player of the year in 2004, he went ninth overall in the draft and signed for $2.15 million. He struggled in two years in low Class A in 2005-06, but had a breakout season in the hitter-friendly California League in 2007.

 

Strengths: Nelson has excellent bat speed, drawing comparisons to a young Gary Sheffield. Once he lowered and quieted his hands in his stance in July, he hit .333 with 13 homers in the last two months. He showed marked improvement looking for a pitch to hit and not missing it when he got it. He has plus speed and arm strength, as well as excellent work habits.

Weaknesses: Nelson needs to smooth out his footwork defensively, particularly when he gets into throwing position. But he did make improve his range and reliability at shortstop and no longer seems on the verge of moving to second base or center field.

The Future: In his fifth pro season, he's ready for Double-A. He'll continue to stay at shortstop, though Troy Tulowitzki ahead of him and Hector Gomez behind make it unlikely Nelson will play there in Colorado. He has more upside than Clint Barmes and Jayson Nix, who figure to be the Rockies' second basemen in 2008.

Good. I think it's better that Jimenez actually plays in Salt Lake, and Nelson should be able to fill what Jimenez was being used for since Callaspo was activated.

Hot hitting nets Rockies' Nelson Player of Week

Story: Chris Nelson's blistering numbers at the plate last week earned the Rockies third baseman his first career National League Player of the Week honors.

Spin: Nelson hit a Major League-best .560 (14-for-25) last week, while also leading the league in hits and total bases (21). The 27-year-old hit safely in all six games last week and notched multihit efforts in five of those contests. He also matched his career best of three hits in a single game on three occasions -- doing so twice against the Padres and once against the Giants. Nelson's hitting streak sits at eight games overall entering play Monday, and he's also scored at least one run in seven of those eight games. In his third season with the Rockies, Nelson is hitting .294 with nine home runs and 47 RBIs.
