Piggybacking on Glen's post about how horrendous the Angels' pitching has been of late, I wonder is it so much the pitching or the competition? 49 runs in 4 games over the stretch?! How much is that the pitching, the competition, how often the competition knows our pitching because of all the games we play against them, or any other factors?

It's late in the year so we fans are a bit numb to losing like this at this point, but it's pretty discouraging. How much do we need an outside ace?

we're not good enough to beat good teams but we are good enough to be bad teams.

we just won 7 of 9 from CWS and TEX.

now we've lost 6 of 8 to SEA OAK and HOU

we're in fall training.  end of the year spring training when the games still count.

remember though, when we got swept by boston early in the year we got outscored 27-3 and then lost the next night to the giants 8-1 so 35-4 over the four games.  That stretch was the beginning of the end of our season.  For whatever reason, the team never recovered from that postponed game in KC.

Shoe, Pena and Heaney were all pretty bad during the last 3 games.   But then it was a mostly randoms.  Like Bridwell giving up 7 runs in 2 games or Amonte 5.  or jim johnson for 6 unearned etc.

tonight it's Barria vs. Verlander.  should be fun.

Apparently we have different definitions of "fun."

But yeah, you make good points.

I think this is mostly good hitting teams taking advantage of us. I really think that Shoe and Heaney and MOST (but not all) of the pen is better than this. Heaney and Shoe got burned by three bad pitches. That's what good hitting teams do to bad pitches.

I have a great deal of respect for Gurriel, since the playoffs last year. The guy gets good ABs. He can get to anything in the strike zone.

Still, in the competitive AL West, we REALLY need a couple more impact players for next year. I like one big hitter, a true leadoff guy, a closer and then start to employ the bullpen game strategy, next year.

I dont like signing a starter. Starters are too injury prone. Dont the Angels know.

As far as the A's go, they have to be a little concerned about the bullpen. Outside of the blow outs against the Angels, their pen has looked horrible in the 9-7 loss to the Angels and they gave up a four run lead yesterday.

Lots of pitchers are gassed, this time of year. Or dont belong on an MLB roster, at this point in their career. Of the 30 teams playing yesterday 16 scored five runs or more. Four teams scored 10 runs or more.

That is like the worst definition of 'funbags' ever.....

So you think we have enough starting pitching in-house?
