Mike Trout is having one of the 15 best hitting seasons in the five decades

Man -- that list is nutty..   Juiced Bonds was a video game character...

So, not trying to derail this thread but Dick Allen doesn't get anywhere near the amount of respect he deserves considering how great a player he was.   I get that he was painted as an asshole and that has its consequences -- but the dude retired with an OPS+ of 156....  Same as Willie Mays, better than Hank Aaron, Joltin Joe, and Frank Thomas...

From age 22 through age 32 he put up a career OPS+ of 165... for perspective..  Mike Trout is sitting at 175...

Jim Rice is in the HOF....  Dick Allen isn't....  Again, I get that he's viewed as controversial and all that, but given the racism he endured in the minors you'd think his name would come up more often than it has.   His autobiography "Crash, the Life and TImes of Dick Allen" is one of the best baseball books I've ever read.

Thomas, McCovey, Brett, Allen, and Trout are likely the ONLY ones on that list who didn't juice up?

Allen also began his career for a seemingly racist org (Phillies) in 1964.   He had to put up with a lot in the 1960s.    That year he had with the ChiSox in 1972 was a thing of marvel, after somewhat struggling with the Dogs in 1971, and the ChiSox were his third team in 3 seasons (Cards and Dogs before that).   That 1972 season also helped the ChiSox improve to 2nd place in the AL West (87-67), just two years after losing 106 games.

Allen was the best hitter in the game from 1964-74, putting up a MLB leading 163 wRC+. He was also 4th in fWAR during that span of time.

He should be a Hall of Famer. There is the "angry black guy" thing that racists held against him, but that doesn't explain why he hasn't been voted in by the Veteran's Committee. I suspect he will be eventually, but the other problem is that his career was relatively short: Only 1749 career games.

But his numbers don't lie: He's a Hall of Famer, and certainly better than dozens who are already in.

That's it exactly...  he was viewed as threatening because unlike Reggie Jackson who let the racism get to him at times and played along -- Dick Allen never backed down.   Dude was a rock.

Babe Ruth averaged a 206 OPS+ through 22 major league seasons, with 13 years of at least 192.

I know...different times, different pitchers.

I have it on good authority pitchers were only throwing 75 back then.

Take out the roiders, it's top 5. Arguably 4th. Honestly, I don't 100% trust anybody on that list except Brett, Allen & McCovey.

Yeah, really.

I just love seeing Frank Thomas doing all these testosterone ads now...................is it much different than andro, which McGwire was taking?

Was surprised to see frank thomas on there, but i guess i shouldnt be.

Hes not brought up nearly as often as other big name 90s sluggers like griffey, mcgwire, and brady anderson (lol), but he was a freaking beast.

Young Frank Thomas was a physical specimen...   A dude that big with that ridiculous bat speed -- such a pretty swing too.

the only athletes I've ever stood next to that amazed me by their size were Thomas, Shaq and Yao Ming.

That in itself is a good point.

But mcgwire wasnt taking andro. Sure, he was actually taking it...but it was simply supplementing the real gear he was using.

Trout will finish 2nd to Betts, I think... which is understandable.  Betts is arguably having as good of a season. I still think there's room for debate.... especially when it comes to defensive numbers.

MLB Network often sets up conversations with graphics like that.  Context matters.  It's not like they titled it "top 5 mvp candidates".  Iwatch the channel every day. They definitely give Trout his due.  One guy today picked Trout as MVP.... Eric Byrnes picked Betts.
