I'm of 2 minds on this kid;
#1 is is this a fluke?  2 teams passed on him he wasnt on anyones radar and suddenly puts up a performance like this?  He either figured something out big time or got really lucky.
#2 this might be a sell high chance in terms of some of the much discussed trades.

Just because a player is traded multiple times doesn't mean he was passed on. It could mean that the team already had depth at that position or while viewed as talented, they needed to part ways with the player to improve in other areas of weakness.

Remember, as a 19-20 year old the season before in Low-A he walked 41 times, hit 12 HR and stole 34 bases.

He is also a guy that needs to be on a 40 man roster starting next year which puts the trading team on the clock.   They also could have simply liked Cron and his value.

Granted, but even this article suggest it came out of nowhere.  He wasnt on our top lists pre-season and suddenly jumps to a top 2-3 spot?  How often does that happen?  Especially in trade for a guy in Cron that most didnt value.
I hope im wrong, i hope he just put stuff together, its just not something you see often

It isn’t like he is a top 3 prospect in baseball it is more that he had one of the top 3 seasons this year in the minors.  Fletcher would never be a top 10 prospect but he would have been on that list in the top 10 if he had played all season in the minors, he had the most hits and the most extra base hits in the minors while also hitting for a very high average.  Ward may have made the top 20 list as well because he was hitting very well.

Let's not forget that 23 teams passed on Trout in the draft.  And we are also talking about Dipoto being one of the GMs to trade Rengifo.  He trades prospects like flies land on sh!t.

Nice article about Rengifo's journey to the Angels organization.

Third team’s the charm for Luis Rengifo?

From Seattle to Tampa Bay to Los Angeles, speedy infielder can hit

Seattle Mariners General Manager Jerry Dipoto has been that one guy in your fantasy league who wakes up early Sunday mornings trying to trade a number four starter for a bench bat that will be on waivers Tuesday morning. Since being fired by the Los Angeles Angels in 2015, and subsequently hired a month later by the fellow American League West denizen Seattle Mariners, Dipoto has become a trade machine during his tenure with Seattle.

One of his smaller trades was a few days past the non-waiver trade deadline last season when he acquired pitcher Ryan Garton and catcher Mike Marjama from the Tampa Bay Rays for prospects Luis Rengifo, Anthony Misiewicz and a player to be named later (Osmy Gregorio).

Of the three youngsters dealt, Rengifo stuck out. Signed as a 16-year old out of Venezuela in 2014, he’s a switch-hitter who can play more positions than one hand can count.

The Arizona Fall League has the top minor league prospects showcased but the Angels only fielder is Jahmai Jones. I am surprised neither Rengifo or Adell was added to the roster having the better seasons but maybe the Angels want Jones to see more action. It's too bad since I go every year and would like to see how Rengifo and Adell would fare against players much older than them.

On a side note the A's are sending a kid name Skye Bolt. That is a guy that will never need a nickname.

BTW, Rengifo to the Mariners was a Jack Z international signing, not Dipoto. So it's not like he was one of Jerry's kids, those guys are still low flooring in the minors unless they had talent and then they were traded.

Rengifo could probably benefit from another 2-3 months at AAA in 2019.   To rise from high-A to AAA in one season is a huge adjustment.

Could be, with more 2B training at AAA, the future leadoff hitter/2B?

feels more like a breakout than an aberration based on his peripherals and how much they improved.  k rate went down.  walk rate was way up.

they obviously targeted him for a reason but I think I remember Billy mentioned in an interview that is was a pleasant surprise as to how well he'd done this year.

Definitely think he'll start next year in AAA.  would be amazing if he can turn into a Jean Segura type with a little more plate discipline.  or a whit merrifield.

I have him pegged as a Maicer Izturis type.  Not a starter in the major leagues, but too good to keep on the bench for large periods of time.  Someone that starts 3 or 4 out of every 5 games. but somehow or someway makes his presence felt in 5/5 games through pinch hitting and pinch running, or as a defensive replacement.  Really a super-utility player.  Good enough defensively to shift around the infield as needed.  Not enough pop in his bat to be dangerous, but enough to keep them honest at least.  Good plate discipline.  Not enough speed to be given the green light whenever he's aboard, but enough speed to steal 20 bags if you let him.

Rengifo will be a useful major leaguer in my opinion.  Not a star......maybe not even a starter, but quite good nonetheless.

So in the same link, #20 on the list. Not too shabby, Eppy.

20. Patrick Sandoval, SP, Los Angeles Angels Angels Depth Chart

Acquiring the 21-year-old Sandoval from the Astros for free agent-to-be catcher Martin Maldonado could turn out to be the steal of the trade deadline. While the lefty didn’t stand out in Houston’s deep farm system, he was having a strong season at the High-A and Low-A levels at the time of the trade (2.56 ERA and 9.9 K/9 in 88 innings). The change of scenery didn’t affect him one bit as he tossed 14 2/3 shutout innings in the California League before finishing the season with four impressive Double-A starts (19 2/3 IP, 3 ER, 27 K).

I'll just day this.  I've seen enough prospects with "ace level" projection that either couldn't find the strike zone and failed to make it to the majors, or ended up getting hurt, or just ended up in the bullpen for a number of reasons.  And then I've seen enough guys that really didn't project all that well develop into very good mid or back end starter types.

Sandoval, I don't care if he doesn't throw 95+.  He's getting it done just like Barria did at the same velocity Barria did.  And in my opinion, Barria has shown as a kid barely old enough to drink, that he's a solid #3/4 starter in the major leagues.  So I take Pat Sandoval over the guys that commonly are ranked over him any day of the week.

Canning and Suarez are better than Sandivoal is, at least in my opinion.  But scouts are going to like guys like Jose Soriano, Chris Rodriguez and Luis Pena more than Sandoval, and I think Sandoval is better than every single one of them.

I got Barria's autograph this spring. Chuck pointed him out as he was sitting right near where we were.

So I hopped over, knelt down next to him and got his autograph. Then, since I'm a fat clumsy F*ck, I tried getting up and fell backwards into the people behind me who were then pissed because a 300 pound man just fell ass-first into their face.

But yeah, Barria's a nice kid.

Why did you push @Chuckster70 into those people ass-first after you fell into them? It's 300 pounds of muscle though right Chuck? :D
