Have the aliens arrived?

@Thomas...you live in New Mexico...what the hell is going on?

“The Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy who manages the facility is addressing a security issue at this time,” Lifson said. “We have decided to vacate the facility at this time as precautionary measure. It was our decision to evacuate the facility.”

Otero County Sheriff Benny House said the Otero County Sheriff’s Office was asked to standby.

“The FBI is refusing to tell us what’s going on,” House said. “We’ve got people up there (at Sunspot) that requested us to standby while they evacuate it. Nobody would really elaborate on any of the circumstances as to why. The FBI were up there. What their purpose was nobody will say.”

He said he has a lot of unanswered question about what occurred at Sunspot.

“But for the FBI to get involved that quick and be so secretive about it, there was a lot of stuff going on up there,” House said. “There was a Blackhawk helicopter, a bunch of people around antennas and work crews on towers but nobody would tell us anything.”

@red321 Hadn't even heard about this. If I had to guess perhaps the Feds needed the capabilities of the lab for rather classified reasons. And for whatever reason the existing military facilities were unavailable or otherwise insufficient.   A rather significant solar storm did occur yesterday. Space force jokes aside, the US government gets kind of protective of the birds flying in orbit. I doubt the real reason is nearly as exciting as the speculation would suggest.

Authorities are staying quiet about that mysterious solar observatory evacuation in New Mexico

This is getting even more bizarre.

The observatory is located high in Sacramento Mountains. The closest city is Alamogordo, at the base of the Sacramentos — about 15 miles as the crow flies, but nearly an hour's drive time away.

The U.S. Postal Service, which operates the Sunspot Post Office, evacuated its employees, though McAteer said he did not know how many people worked at the facility.

Why the F*ck does a sun research facility with a few dozen employees/residents need a post office?

A spokeswoman for the nonprofit group that runs the facility said the organization was addressing a “security issue,” but offered no additional information, other than, “I can tell you it definitely wasn’t aliens.”

(It's aliens.)

13 hours ago, gotbeer said:

New Mexico observatory closure stemmed from FBI child porn probe: documents

So the FBI closed an observatory for 11 day, evacuating everybody that works there, over a janitor downloading child porn.  And not even charging him?

FBI would have been better off saying the Russians hacked the observatory.

They got called off the case to hunt down the perpetrator of a groping charge that was never filed 35 years ago.
