OC Register: Angels’ Shohei Ohtani likely headed for Tommy John surgery after MRI shows new damage in elbow

ARLINGTON, Texas — It appears Angels two-way standout Shohei Ohtani will not be able to avoid Tommy John surgery after all.

On Wednesday, the team announced an MRI showed new damage to Ohtani’s elbow ligament following his return to the mound Sunday, and elbow reconstruction has been recommended.

Ohtani started Sunday night in Houston and had a clear velocity drop, even though the team didn’t express concern publicly. If all went well, he was expected to throw a bullpen session Wednesday in Texas and again Friday before making his next start Sunday against the White Sox in Chicago.

If there’s any positive to the situation, it’s that the Angels can get Ohtani into surgery as quickly as possible. If that happens, barring setbacks, he should be ready to return and pitch again for the start of the 2020 season and likely keep hitting during the 2019 season. He concludes the pitching portion of his rookie season with a 3.31 ERA in 10 starts.

He is in the lineup for Wednesday’s game in Texas, batting third as the designated hitter, and he is expected to go to Chicago for the next series. He can hit until he has surgery. And he hasn’t decided officially if or when he’ll have it.

Much more to come on this story.
