Makes me wonder if HIPAA laws prevent this kind of info being put into a national database where this would come up in a background. Maybe it's because he was a juvenile at the time?

Makes me wonder how he got a gun.

He legally purchased one in Maryland. Maryland's requirements for handgun purchases are strict. Backgrounds checks are pointless if disqualifying stuff isn't reported.

That was why I questioned whether HIPAA laws have to be looked at. Mental illness treatment falls under that umbrella. Good luck getting the ADA and ACLU to agree with easing off of them.

Mental health information is generally protected under federal privacy laws. My late father was hospitalized for depression, yet he had no problem getting a concealed carry permit in Florida.

Exactly why adding more laws will accomplish nothing

Isn't it possible for certain diagnosis of mental issues to be uploaded to a database, but not give any more information to the government except for a "deny" status for guns?

Give the government an inch, and they and the lawyers will take a mile.  What starts as a simple deny status for guns will morph into profiling by the police state, deny status for other things like driving, or even going to the extreme and saying that those on the list are on medications, so they shouldn't be allowed to buy alcohol.  And you know this list will be argued as a the public needs to know, so it'll be like the sex offender registry and open for everyone to see.  Where employers and neighborhoods will conveniently deny service.

Yep. So, naturally:

I use google search for two primary reasons. 1. To spell-check infrequently used words so as to prevent an encounter with @EnglishCop. 2. I use it like most people use it - to locate pictures of aging Asian professional males for online profile pics.

I don't need the government involved in either scenario.
