The Braves have activated outfielder Jason Heyward off the DL, the team announced. In a corresponding move, right-hander Jordan Walden was placed on the 15-day DL with shoulder inflammation.

Heyward, 23, missed close to a month following an emergency appendectomy. He was hitting .121/.261/.259 with two home runs in 69 plate appearances before the injury. Heyward received some MVP votes last season by hitting .269/.335/.479 with 27 homers.

Walden, 25, has allowed seven runs in 13 innings this year (4.85 ERA). He has struck out 16 while walking only three. One of those three was intentional. The Braves acquired the former All-Star closer from the Angels for Tommy Hanson over the winter.

Atlanta had been platooning Jordan Schafer and Reed Johnson in right field during Heyward's absence. With Walden out, right-handed setup duties figure to go to Cory Gearrin and Anthony Varvaro .

Walden's control is better, but he's had periods like this before and then self destructed.

His ERA is still pretty high for the NL.

Not really. It was high risk, high upside for high risk, high upside swap. Braves had more of a need in the 'pen, Angels had more of a need in starting. Both Hanson and Walden were total wild cards given the information the GMs had at the time the trade was made.

a starting pitcher is almost always more valuable than a reliever, even the really good ones.  And walden wasn't even very good.   Hanson is a question mark, but he has pitched well to this point and hasn't had any injury issues (yet).

 

I think if walden has serious shoulder issues, and hanson goes on to pitch effectively for this team, it will be one of the most lopsided trades this team has seen in a while.   And it would go our way, for once.

It was a pretty even trade. Both these arms have their issues and injury concerns. You could say the braves probably come out a little ahead because Walden is cheaper and should be with the team longer than Hanson will be with the Halos

Not sure where our bigger need is right now....last fall, when the trade was made, it was probably in the rotation...now, we're goshawful in both the pen and the rotation....on the whole, I'd probably still rather have Hanson than Walden but it's pretty much a push....although both were big time prospects, neither is anything to get excited about right now....I guess you have to give Hanson a pass until he gets back in the saddle....

Who is the Hanson I keep hearing about? Seriously though, it is tough to say who got the better end of this deal. Hanson has rarely been available to make a fair judgement.

if the Braves had given us Hanson the band, or even a case of the soda, then we would have been fleecing them.  But the fact that it was Tommy Hanson the pitcher, I think they're feeling pretty good about it.
