Trout may not return when eligible because of family matters?

Very possible.

Theyre pissed that they have to call him subway instead of jersey mike.

I dont know how well-funded the Jersey Mike chain is, but if Trout does sign with Philly or a NY team, that would be a natural endorsement.

It would also be more difficult for him to have any thoughts of entering the Hall as an Angel.

With Vlad, it was a no-brainer, even though his numbers were better as an Expo. "Which franchise do you choose, one with no members yet, or a defunct franchise?"

Martinez and Ramirez are also very much in the picture.

If Martinez (5.6 WAR) was chosen over Betts (8.0 WAR) that would be messed up...truly.  Jose Ramirez (7.5 WAR) definitely (at least you'd think) is the main competitor.  With Trout missing time, if he and Betts are close again like in 2016 (10.5 WAR vs 9.7 WAR), I'm not sure it will go to Trout this time.  It was a bit of an anomaly that Trout won it over someone on a East Coast team that actually made the playoffs that year.

There is about a 1% chance Trout wins it this year. He has lost time due to injury. He is on a 4th place team and Betts is on a historic 1st place team that might eclipse the all time wins for a team record. Basically unless Trout has some incredible September where he vaults the Angels into the playoffs and even that it is a long shot.

Trout would have to have one of his amazing offensive months to end the season to have a chance for the MVP this year.

Betts has been better this year and on the best team. No brainer right now.

Trout: 109 G .309 .459 1.083 OPS 195 OPS+ 99 BB (20 IBB) 7.8 WAR

Betts: 100 G .350 .438 1.106 OPS 193 OPS+ 58 BB (8 IBB) 8 WAR

They've essentially had the same season, except Mookie gets more pitches to hit since the Red Sox actually have offensive weapons beyond Mookie Betts.

Yeah, I was a little surprised when he won despite having the better numbers, as writers tend to favor players who are on teams that make it to the playoffs.  Right now, they are neck and neck and I think it would take a good 1 0 WAR separation between the two for Trout to be seriously considered.  Ramirez at 7.5 WAR has a shot if he can pass J.D. Martinez for the HR lead (currently 37 vs 35) and put up a 30/30 season (currently with 27 steals, which leads the league)...even more so if he can put up a 40/40 season as 13 steals in the next 40+ games is not out of the question.

Betts has a higher WAR and has played in less games. Close yes, but edge goes to Betts. If Trout goes on a terror and Betts struggles, Trout will have a chance.
