Could have released Pujols and instead played Cron. But hey let's keep this retirement home open a few more years. Wasn't this the year you said Pujols was going to retire because of something?

think about the economics of paying albert not to play and how that would affect the halos ability to bring in new players. take your time.

in a vacuum you are right.  When constructing a roster that has a short bench, where at the beginning of a season  your only back up 2nd baseman and short stop is your starting 3rd baseman, then yes, this trade was necessary.

Not sure i see how thats an "in a vacuum" issue.  The roster was what it was at that time.
I dont agree with where it was at that time i would have liked to have seen a few things done differently leading up to that, but its moot,.

If Cron were here, they'd still have kept Albert and Valbuena.  Marte would have been the guy to go.  Cron wouldn't have had the same opportunity as he's getting now.  He'd probably be playing worse than he is now.  It wouldn't have made a huge difference from where we currently sit in the standings.

And we wouldn't have Luis Rengifo who has a very good chance to be a solid everyday major league 2nd baseman and leadoff hitter.

If Cron was here, either Marte or Valbueno wouldn't be.  Nice try though!

Just looking at Cron’s numbers vs Albert’s numbers for this year.  They are pretty damn close.  Albert has obviously hit into more double plays, two more than Cron, but Cron has struck out 103 times where Albert, per usual hasn’t struck out much, only 54 times.  Albert grades out better defensively according to dWar.  They have the same batting average, Cron has a better OBP.  The difference comes in the OPS.  Cron has a total of 11 more total bases, 3 more homers and 14 more walks.  Cron has a 1.4 WAR and Albert has a 1.0 WAR.  Cron is basically Albert who can beat out a ground ball to SS when the SS is playing 10 feet on the outfield grass.
