Cron was given 4 seasons and 1,500 PAs to not be more than "Eh" as a offense-minded 1B.  He'd go into regular slumps, even with consecutive starts, and have to be sent down to find his swing again.  He looked like turned a corner in 2016 (.278 .325 .792 OPS 116 OPS+) but decided to shit the bed in 2017 (.248 .305 .741 OPS 98 OPS+).

He put up 2.7 WAR total in 1,500 PA's/400 games...I'd rather have Rengifo

Didn't you hear? Scioscia sabotaged his career.

He doesn't need to be a lefty. He is currently better by miles than our first baseman right now and that should be all that matters.

Well he also doesn’t play third and when they made the decision they needed someone who could play both.

C.J. Cron is a one-dimensional butt goblin who never actually grew out of his baby fat after 28 years of parental frustration.

He can hit homeruns occasionally. Wow! He can also play mediocre defense at the Firefighter of infield positions.

I still can't fathom that anyone is fretting the loss of CJ Cron. I thought we wanted a good team here

Except that the alternatives ended up being worse...........for more money. The Angel way.

BTW, Cron has better numbers in his career against RHP. More HRs, better avg. better OPS, the works. So what if he isnt a lefty, the reason some contend he was let go?

In fact, a characteristic of the Angels for the last few years has been that they hit RHP better than LHP, even with a predominately RH lineup.

OK, he cant play 3rd. Surely we have someone who could play third that cant hit (like Nobueno) for a lot cheaper.

But Valbuena is already here.  Cron is not here and the main reason he is not here is he played one position, at that position was 1st base.  If he was a 3rd baseman only he would probably have been kept.

can we put this discussion to bed once and for all, boys?

cron = 1b and DH

valbuena = 1b, 3b, and DH (if needed)

we ALL agree that we'd rather have cron than valbuena, BUT THERE WASN'T ROOM ON THE ROSTER TO CARRY HIM SINCE HE COULD ONLY PLAY ONE POSITION. A multi-position player was needed after Ohtani was signed, knowing that he was going to DH when he wasn't pitching.

none of us like having valbuena, but it is what it is, and hopefully his DFA day will give us cause to celebrate together and hold hands while singing "if you're happy and you know clap your hands."

Could have released Pujols and instead played Cron. But hey let's keep this retirement home open a few more years. Wasn't this the year you said Pujols was going to retire because of something?

Albert Pujols is not getting released for a guy like Cron.  I said that Albert would be losing playing time this year, and next year will be his last.  I still believe the second part of that.  You live in a fantasy world kev.  Enjoy your stay.

This post was inevitable, but it doesnt change the fact that the trade was necessary.

in a vacuum you are right.  When constructing a roster that has a short bench, where at the beginning of a season  your only back up 2nd baseman and short stop is your starting 3rd baseman, then yes, this trade was necessary.
