I am begging. Please get rid of Valbuena. Please.

Thanks to both stormngt and Jeff for clarifying the whole 40 man roster/service clock details. 

There is something to be said for bringing up rooks and seeing how they do against pitching/hitters in the bigs. And how they hit or pitch outside of the rarified air of SLC. It can help to clarify what you might be willing to trade for (or away) at the deadline.

If they bring up Thaiss, it does use up one extra spot over the winter, because he doesn’t have to be protected this winter. Ward has to go on the roster this winter already. 

I haven’t really analyzed their roster and farm system enough to know how tight the 40-man will be over the winter. Bear in mind that there’s no 60-day DL over the winter, so all those guys like Cozart, Meyer, Jewell, etc., who are out for the season and not on the roster now will need spots over the winter. 

The other consideration is options. If you bring a guy up and he doesn’t stay up the whole rest of the season, he will use up one of his three option years. 

As for the actual service time clock, were really past where that matters. Around early June is when the super 2 threshold happens. And the extra year of service time passes in mid April. 

If they felt one of those guys could help them right now, I don’t think they’d let any of that stuff stop them. The only exception being that they wouldn’t call someone up for a temporary stint.

Players that are eligible for the rule 5 after the season who might need to be protected - Taylor Ward, Zach Houchins, Jared Walsh, Luis Rengifo, Jose Suarez, Luis Pena, Hutton Moyer, Roberto Baldoquin, Brendon Sanger, Joe Gatto, Conor Lillis-White,  Leo Rivas, Adrian Almeida, Adam Hofacket.  

Of that group, I see 5 that we have to protect in Ward, Walsh, Rengifo, Suarez, Pena.  Gatto, Lillis-White, and Almeida are bubble guys.  

Currently on the 60 day dl are Cozart, Meyer, JC Ramirez, Jewell, Wood, Middleton, Shoe, Rivera.  There are probably 7 roster spots needed for guys on this list.

Currently on the 10 day dl are Johnson, Lamb, Pujols, Richards, Trop, and Young.  Of that group, there are 2.  If they re-sign Richards, they won't add him to the roster until later in the off season.  

Those currently on the 40 man and how that could break down (those not on the 10 day dl)

That's 31 who are musts in my opinion.  

There are another 12 on the bubble.  Although right now, Morris, Almonte, Paredes, Bridwell and Castillo aren't likely to stick so it's really only 7 and that's assuming they keep Cowart and Marte on there.  

we also don't know if they keep JC Ramirez, Wood, and Shoe.  

That puts the roster at 38 max for now.  Obviously, a lot can happen, but it appears we have some flexibility.
