BOSTON — The Angels finally showed some life against the Boston Red Sox, with a stirring rally from an early six-run deficit.

In the end, though, they lost again.

Just after the Angels had completed the comeback to tie the score in the top of the seventh, they gave up two runs in the bottom of the inning on their way to a 9-6 loss on Wednesday night.

Although this one wasn’t as ugly on the scoreboard as the others, there was a disturbing end. Rookie right-hander Jake Jewell suffered a gruesome ankle injury when he slid awkwardly covering the plate in the eighth inning. He was taken off the field on a stretcher. There was no immediate word on the exact injury.

The Angels have lost five in a row – not holding a lead in any of them – to fall to 41-40 at the season’s midpoint.

The Angels have now lost all five of their games against Boston, with one to go on Thursday, but this one followed a decidedly different script.

Outscored 36-4 by the Red Sox in the first four games, the Angels fell behind 6-0 when the Red Sox hit three homers against Andrew Heaney in the second inning.

This time, though, the Angels made a game of it, getting one back on an Ian Kinsler homer in the fifth, three on a Martín Maldonado homer in the sixth and two in the seventh, with the help of a Boston error.

After Joe Kelly snagged a comebacker that should have been an inning-ending double play, he fired the ball into center field to allow a run. Andrelton Simmons’ double then tied the score.

The Angels had a chance to take the lead, but Kole Calhoun and Maldonado both struck out with runners at second and third.

José Álvarez then took the mound in the bottom of the inning. He got the first two outs before walking Eduardo Nuñez. Rafael Devers then launched a double off the center field wall, putting Boston back on top. Sandy Leon’s single added an insurance run.

The Angels threatened again in the eighth, loading the bases on two walks and an error. Red Sox closer Craig Kimbrel struck out Luis Valbuena to end the inning.

Although Kimbrel then worked a scoreless ninth to send the Angels to another loss, at least they could take some solace in forcing the Red Sox to use him.

Early, it looked like the Red Sox would win another blowout.

Heaney got through the first inning without allowing a run, which was actually a first for the Angels against the Red Sox this year.

In the second, though, Heaney left a sinker over the middle of the plate and Nuñez hit it over the center field fence. Devers then singled, followed by Sandy Leon yanking a 3-and-1 sinker over the Green Monster, for a two-run homer.

An out later, Heaney walked Mookie Betts, gave up a single to Andrew Benintendi and then hung a changeup to J.D. Martinez, who crushed it for a three-run homer.

Heaney lasted into the fourth, and relievers Hansel Robles, Cam Bedrosian and Justin Anderson all had scoreless outings to give the Angels a chance to come back.

More to come on this story.
