OC Register: John Lamb heads to DL, forcing Angels to go to their 12th starting pitcher

BOSTON — John Lamb added his name to the list of injured Angels pitchers on Wednesday, pushing Deck McGuire into the rotation.

Lamb was placed on the disabled list a day after lasting just 1-2/3 innings against the Boston Red Sox, diagnosed with elbow and shoulder inflammation.

“After he came out he was getting little stiff in his shoulder,” Manager Mike Scioscia said. “His arm didn’t feel great, so we’ll take a step backwards with John and get him evaluated and see where we are.”

Lamb’s next turn would have been on Sunday in Baltimore, which now clears the way for McGuire to become the Angels’ 12th starting pitcher.

McGuire, who pitched four innings in relief of Lamb on Tuesday, has started 181 games in the minors, including eight of his nine minor league games this year. McGuire has appeared in relief in all six of his major league games, with the Toronto Blue Jays and Angels. McGuire, 29, has a career 4.30 ERA in the minors. The Angels acquired him in a trade with the Texas Rangers, who had designated him for assignment.

The Angels could be getting another of their starters back as soon as next week.

Garrett Richards, out with a hamstring injury, threw a second bullpen session on Wednesday and Scioscia said it went “great.” The Angels were still undecided on Richards’ next step, but it could be a rehab assignment this weekend, which could clear the way for him to pitch for the Angels next week.

The Angels also called up reliever Jake Jewell, who was allowed to come back after being optioned for less than 10 days because he was replacing a player on the disabled list.

The Angels also optioned reliever Akeel Morris, who would have been unavailable to pitch on Thursday after working two innings on Wednesday. They called up infielder Nolan Fontana, restoring a normal four-man bench instead of the three they had.

ALSO

Mike Trout played catch again and feels “much better,” Scioscia said, but it remains unclear when he’ll be able to return to center field. Trout, who has a sprained right index finger, was in the lineup as the designated hitter for an eighth straight game on Wednesday.
