BOSTON — The Angels have two games left to salvage some of their pride against the Boston Red Sox.

After they lost 9-1 to the Red Sox on Tuesday night, the Angels have dropped all four games this season against Boston by a combined score of 36-4.

The first three of those were in Anaheim in April, when the Angels entered the series on a seven-game winning streak. Two months later, the Angels brought an injury-depleted, struggling team to Fenway Park, and the drubbing continued in the first game of this three-game series.

This one got away in one ugly inning.

John Lamb allowed a homer to Mookie Betts on his first pitch of the game, but his night actually got much worse in the second inning.

Lamb gave up a leadoff single to Eduardo Nuñez, but then he appeared to have gotten Rafael Devers to hit a double play ball. Ian Kinsler backhanded the ball, but it popped out of his glove. He picked it up too late to even salvage an out at first.

Christian Vazquez then hit a grounder to shortstop that would have been the third out of the inning if the Angels had converted the double play. Instead, it only moved the two runners into scoring position, and then both scored when Jackie Bradley Jr. blooped a double into left field.

Betts then drew a walk, and Andrew Benintendi hit a double off the Green Monster, driving in the third run of the inning. Lamb struck out J.D. Martinez. The Angels then intentionally walked Xander Bogaerts to load the bases, bringing the left-handed Mitch Moreland up against the left-handed Lamb.

Moreland broke his bat on a comebacker that tipped off Lamb’s glove and dribbled into the infield grass, a run-scoring infield hit that put the Red Sox up 5-0.

That was it for Lamb, and pretty much for the game.

Chris Young homered to pull the Angels within 5-1 in the third. They ended up bringing the potential tying run to the plate that inning. Albert Pujols grounded out with the bases loaded.

About the only positive on the night for the Angels was that newcomer Deck McGuire managed 12 outs in relief. He soaked up half the game, which will allow the Angels to bring a fresh bullpen into the final two games of the series.

More to come on this story.
