Would 90 Wins & No Playoffs Make You Happy?

Recommended Posts

Lately I have been reading & not posting. There is 5-7 members on here that I can only handle in small doses. But from the reading I have done it seems like a lot of members are unhappy with this season. Even with all the injuries they are on pace for 86-76 season. Last year they only won 80. My prediction of 90-72 may not come to fruition. But if the team goes 90-72 misses the playoffs.... it does mean the Mariners get in..... but let's say they lose in the WC game. Are people happy? Chime in if you feel like it. I am curious if the 13-3 start raised the bar.

My vote is I would be happy.

I’m happy with that, we kinda need to be aware that this was kind of still a transitional year. Sure they added, Kinsler, Upton, etc. but we still didn’t have the firepower to compete with Houston. Next season and 2020 should really be the seasons the Angels are in the top of the AL and giving Houston a run for its money.

Im confident that Eppler is pushing us into a legit contender. But it takes time

Any outcome not involving the playoffs is a failure IMO. However, 90 wins is nothing to be ashamed of and should be considered an accomplishment. I may be holding them to a higher standard based on what IMO has been a team with their sites on the world series, but in general I feel like every teams goal is to get there.

No. Unless you get into the playoffs what’s the point. I’d rather be dead last and get a better draft pick.

As shitty as that would be, I agree 100%. It seems like that's more common in sports today. If you're not an elite team with playoff aspirations you may as well be the best at being bad.

Ya you can see it in basketball and even now it’s starting in baseball. I don’t know why it hasn’t crossed over to football. But in my mind there’s nothing worse than being middle of the road. Being 500 or just above or just below just means you get an average draft pick and there’s no playoffs. It’s a wasted season. Try as hard as you can to make the playoffs. Once it’s no longer a chance. I don’t care if u win another game.

I agree.

I’d rather have the higher pick.

Just like the nfl. Why finish 8-8 and pick 14th when you can finish 4-12/ 3-13 and have a top 5 pick.

It actually started with football. Teams tank all the time for the best player in the draft.

You’re entitled to that opinion but hell no do I want to sit through a 100 loss season.   Damn this place sucks when we lose back to back games.   But if it were to happen let’s have it happen with the next manager so I can smirk at all the haters.

God forbid you find a real hobby.

If you’re going to suck, you suck right and get the highest draft pick possible.

Man, I simply don't agree.  I would rather watch the team win more than lose.  Why would anyone want to watch their favorite team lose most of its games?

During a bad season i'd just watch Trout bat, Ohtani pitch & bat & maybe Skaggs pitch too.
If there happens to be a top draft prospect thats a no brainer to be 1st overall with the first name Hank, fans of some team around the league will start a "tank for hank" campaign like in the NFL when people did "Suck for Luck" (Andrew Luck) or in the NHL "Fail for Nail" (Nail Yakupov).

Playoffs or bust.

I remember 90 win teams that just fell short.

Sometimes that's worse than going into a season knowing you have no chance, not expecting anything, and meeting those expectations.

I grew up with the teams of the 70s. I didn't have high hopes until 1977. They weren't fulfilled until 1979.

Except draft picks are a lot different in baseball.  Almost none make immediate impacts.

You’re right my hobby should be to hope my favorite team loses as many games as possible.   That would be delightful.

Just call me Hamiltown or any number of other similar names.

True, also some of the teams that did historic tank jobs ended up really regretting it:

Ottawa Senators tanked one year in early 90s to get the first pick that ended up being a bust, Alexander Daigle actually boasted about being 1st overall & not 2nd like Chris Pronger......Chris Pronger ends up winning the cup in 2007 defeating Ottawa & had such a great career while Daigle is one of the worst #1 picks in sports history.

When the Oilers tanked for Nail Yakupov, they ended up regretting it cause Nail ended up being a bust.

In a way, I'd be proud of the team. In yet another, I'd think how we wasted so many games when the bullpen could have been fixed earlier. It would also be a bit of a stick in the craw to do so well and not make the playoffs again. It's such a long season and it's hard on the fans as well as the players.

Draft picks in baseball are a real crap shoot. I had rather have a better team and maybe be a player or two away from being a contender. That can be addressed in free agency.
