ESPN: Angels' Shohei Ohtani (UCL sprain) to be re-evaluated in 2-3 weeks

"The Angels said at that time that Ohtani's ulnar collateral ligament had a Grade 2 sprain, which typically indicates some degree of damage, but not a complete tear. The plan had been for doctors to reevaluate him three weeks from that date, but now that time frame has been moved back."

Saw some slight improvement, but not enough to be optimistic, thus holding off a couple of extra weeks?

By the way I would assume this means they are not going to consider letting him hit the remainder of the year and having him get TJ surgery at the end of the season.

I don't expect Ohtani to pitch again until 2020; however, if he can return as a hitter this season and become the full-time DH next year, then all is not lost. He can still hit even if he's recovering from TJS.

so do you know anyone who has been able to do this while recovering from TJ surgery? or are you just talking out of your hat?

i googled "things Ohtani&Trout claimed on an angels message board" but sadly, i couldn't find anything.

Stop embarrassing yourself, mate. The possibility of Ohtani returning as a hitter was posted everywhere, including ESPN.  Not my fault you're living under a rock.

there are more articles but not a single one of them mentions anything about being able to hit while he's recovering from surgery (the espn article mentions hitting while undergoing treatment only).

got any other evidence, mate?

so it's a possibility, but not a certainty.

you'd have to tread extremely cautiously with him and not push him beyond his limits physically, but i'd be very hesitant to run him out there. i imagine the angels will be cautious, also.

I don't think he's likely to pitch again this year, even under the best case scenario (injection is helpful).....hitting is another story.....have to wait and see....

Best case scenario in my eyes is we see nice improvement in 10days. Then he returns as a DH after the all-star break and they announce they have seen significant healing and aren't worried about TJ surgery.

Ii think that's probably correct.....DH only, no pitching, for the rest of the year, if the report is good...You have to wonder where you fit Pujols in.....if you want to DH Ohtani regularly, not sure Pujols can play 1b on anything close to an everyday basis......
