Generic thread for AV stuff - home theater, displays, controlled lighting, etc.

I finally gave up on the mountain of remotes and just bought the new logitech harmony ultimate that came out a couple weeks ago.

Anyone have any experience with these things? Thumbs up/down?

I had a couple that were given to me when we started selling them at Gamestop.  Probably 10 years ago so I am sure they are better now but it was awful.  The software sucked and I felt like it needed more customize-able buttons.  There were also some simple functions that it couldn't perform.  It has been so long I don't remember exactly what but they sat in a drawer for years until I finally threw them out.  At the time I remember being very glad I didn't spend 200 dollars on it.

yeah, and i dont even watch much TV.

but hunting for remotes for receiver/switch, cable, appletv, blu-ray, etc is getting old.

my display is mounted with the lines through the wall and the components off to the side in a rack - this has a hub so you can communicate with them easily.

ill check it out - if it sucks ill send it back.

anyone seen the new panasonic ZT plasma?

its not yet for sale, but ive heard its amazing. should be available in a matter of weeks.

the first to match the pioneer kuro elite from 2008/2009.

i love my 60" kuro (best tv ever made), but its like 4/5 years old and i kind of want a new one thats thinner and bigger (panny goes up to 65").

but i wont get anything that isnt on par picture quality wise (LCDs tend to look bleh to me, like a bad soap opera or home movie).

i think im gonna spring for this. they're about $4k which is still so much cheaper than the elites where back in the day my friends and i all got ours.

any other plasma-files here?

yep agreed.

for videophiles its plasma or bust.

we'll see how the 4K OLEDs look but i havent been convinced yet.

rad. ok cool.

ive been out of the game for a long time - havent been plasma shopping since i bought the kuro.

if the VT gets thumbs up then the ZT definitely would.

i think it will be the last of the high end plasmas.

I think that ZT is going to be amazing.  I love my VT60, it blows my old PNC7000 out of the water in every way.  One thing I noticed right away other than the picture quality is that it doesn't get nearly as hot as the old one.  Nice little bonus.

Great article. Seems like Panasonic is going out the way Pioneer did... make the best plasma ever and then just stop making them altogether. That's a damn shame if that ends up being the case.

It's personal preference but for me it's not even close, plasma are better. Even a mediocre plasma looks better than a top of the line LCD, imo.

yep i get that feeling too.

though they recently came out and said were not ending plasma division, but i think theyre going to do this amazing ZT to appease the videophiles, then probably move engineers over to LCD/OLED.

and that sucks.

i cant wait to see one in person.

on the "uiltimate" remote front, just set it up.

man this thing is awesome.

i dont know if its worth $350 per se, but its pretty slick.

you hit the "Watch TV" icon on the touch screen, and it: turns on the tv, sets it to input X, turns on the DVR, turns on the receiver/switch, sets it to input Y.

does that for whatever actions you setup: watch tv, watch a movie, watch appletv, play a game, etc.

it controls them all.

the software for setup was great too (and im a hardass software guy).

its pretty awesome. there are now 6 or so other remotes (some tiny, like the itty bitty appletv one) now off in a drawer somewhere.

there is another one that is the same but doesnt have the fancy touch screen, instead you use your phone/tablet for that part.

i think that one is just like $150 or $250.

it can control lights/environment too but i havent played with that yet.

i give it thumbs up.

Right on.  Nice thing about this new Panny is that you can control it from your iPhone over wifi.  Don't need a wireless keyboard or anything, I can use my iPhone or iPad to type stuff out on it if I am searching Hulu or Youtube, etc.

Sony's industry reference monitors are OLED. You guys are kidding yourselves with the home market stuff thinking you are seeing color properly. I got a chance to get a preview of their first series a few years back and it was blow you away quality that rivaled any HD broadcast tube monitor. One of the first things you notice is that there is no side angle loss of color and black purity that is obvious in Plasma and LCD screens, even those manufactured for broadcast reference monitoring.

The hitch? 24.5" viewing area and a $32K price tag.

Recently Sony unveiled a 30" and 56" version for broadcasting in 4K. I haven't had a chance to see one but if based on the same tech as previous models with further improvements I would kill to get one in my edit bay for colortiming shows. Currently we are using a JVC and Panasonic and quite honestly they blow.

Plasma is 178 degree viewing angle, there is no color loss at an angle.  Also, no motion blur from slow refresh rates.  Also, since it isn't back lit, the blacks are way deeper.  Reference or not, no LCD on the planet can reach the black level of a plasma.

Also, every professional AV reviewer out there has all plasmas in their top 5.

Great thread.  I'm currently shopping for a new receiver to replace my 10(!) year old Onkyo.

What receivers are you guys running right now?

Wicked, I'm a big fan of the harmony remotes. I've had several,I've been happy with all of them. I've also found them to be very durable.

for receivers i like pioneer elite, but they're pricey.

check out the new marantz too - they kick ass and and are slim now, like half the height of normal receiver. very sexy.

also yamaha always get good receivers - lots of features and you dont need to break the bank.

I picked up a 2011 Panasonic Viera 60" Plasma last year. Definitely a fave. They really do require proper ambient light control as that glass screen is a glare magnet otherwise.

Nice!  Which model?  S, UT, ST, GT, VT?

One of these days I'll swap out my Denon for a HDMI capable receiver and network capable. One of these days...

Depending on how much you want to spend, these would be my personal suggestions.  I have the 2010 equivalent to the AVR3650.  I love it.  I have setup/experienced similar Denon and Onkyo receivers, and not only is the HK AVR the easiest to use, it puts out the best sound as well.  I have an Infinity 5.1 surround setup hooked up to it.

HK AVR 1700 $325

more zt reviews, everyone saying it is just flat out amazing.

im heading to a AV specialist shop this weekend to check it out in person.

"The clean, high gradation, low-dither panel driving, outstanding anti-reflective screen coating, sublime black-level performance, suitably bright peak luminance, accurate greyscale, gamma and colour, and lack of any troublesome forced video processing features… all combine to make the Panasonic ZT’s picture quality some of the best we’ve ever seen on a flat-screen HDTV during both daytime and nighttime viewing. For someone with a vested interest in film and high quality reproduction of it in the home, it’s impossible not to get a little emotional at the results this panel produces, but we’ll avoid embarrassing ourselves with a fountain of superlatives, and just provide the facts."

"We’ve analysed several outstanding HDTVs in our time, and that has especially been the case in the last few months, where we’ve been treated to an onslaught of plasma televisions that are all phenomenal in one way or another. You can’t go wrong with any of them, but weighed up subjectively, the strengths of the TXP60ZT65B arguably do make it the best HDTV we’ve ever tested."
