Angels trading for proven closer?

Recommended Posts

Not much there except that we'll be looking....Britton (O's are hard to deal with) or Herrera/Hand (very expensive) won't be easy or cheap.....I'd put my money on somebody else.....but it's still early....

Herrera won’t be too expensive.  I doubt a top 15 guy and if it is then you can bet Eppler is looking to extend him.

I think the bigger issue is the competition we'll have for getting him. I think the Astros may be all in too.

The Red Sox, Indians, Twins, Angels, Nats, Cards and D-Backs will all be in the market for relief help at the trade deadline.

If Britton, Hand and Herrera are the only three made available, then the price to acquire one might be extremely steep.

Granted, the Angels have one of the better farm systems in all if baseball right now, so they can afford to outbid those teams, but we've seen what happens when you Dipoto a farm. You have nothing left to trade from, your payroll skyrockets and you have no depth to absorb an injury.

But I do envision a scenario in which the Angels acquire a couple of arms at the deadline.

It’s really slim pickin’s for closers iyam

- familia (Mets need hitters, no up and comers)

-brach closed last season , but would you trust him with the ball in the 9th?

-Herrera too expensive, but he’s sexy

- Britton , unknown but maybe won’t cost as much as Herrera. Probably wants to stay in Baltimore to receive a qualifying offer

-Hand , cost too high, Padres still competing

Herrera, Britton, and Familia will all be free agents at season's end.  Hand will not be.  So it will be interesting to see what the teams request for those who have impending free agency versus the Padres with Hand who has a couple more season's of ARB after this season.

Took a random, equal slice (to keep anyone from quickly determining who was who) out of the following pitchers game logs in '18.
Which would you like to acquire for closer/bullpen?

Pick  to acquire..
Player A - 17 IP, 11 H, 7 BB, 15 K, 2.12 ERA, .180 BAA - 10 of 14 appearances were scoreless
Player B -15.1 IP, 10 H, 5 BB, 21 K, 1.17 ERA, .192 BAA - 13 of 15
Player C - 14 IP, 10 H, 2 BB, 18 K, 3.86 ERA, .192 BAA - 10 of 14
Player D - 19 IP, 16 H, 6 BB, 20 K, 3.79 ERA, .222 BAA - 10 of 16
Player E - 15.1 IP, 12 H, 7 BB, 19 K, 1.17 ERA, .218 BAA - 13 of 15

Compare to the stats from these next two fields...
Player F - 14 IP, 12 H, 0 BB, 9 K, 1.29 ERA, .240 BAA - 12 of 14 appearances were scoreless
Player G - 12 IP, 12 H, 6 BB, 12 K, 0.75 ERA, .245 BAA - 11 of 12
Player H - 13.2 IP, 11 H, 1 BB, 17 K, 1.98 ERA, .220 BAA - 11 of 13
Player I – 14 IP, 17 H, 3 BB, 15 K, 3.21 ERA, .309 BAA – 9 of 13
Player J – 17.2 IP, 9 H, 7 BB, 28 K, 1.02 ERA, .145 BAA – 13 of 15

And then pick another one to acquire....

Player L - 11 IP, 11 H, 4 BB, 15 K, 2.45 ERA, .239 BAA - 12 of 13

C, F, H, or O....best command of the bunch, and the Halos DESPERATELY need good command in the pen.    With their defense, a pitcher can afford to K a few less batters as long as he doesn't walk very many or fall behind a lot of batters.

As for Britton, he is just getting ready to come off of a season long DL stint.   How long will it take him to get his command back?

I think Igbo I had to throw out a completely random guess out there, I'd say the Angels swing a deal with the Padres.

Something like Brandon Marsh, Joe Gatto and Eduardo Paredes for Brad Hand and Kirby Yates.

It'd an overpay, a painful one at that, but it'd certainly turn our bullpen into a competent functioning one, and Hand and Yates are both under team control for multiple years, so it isn't just a rental.

That one I would do, but I don't think the Padres are on the same page yet.

Losing Brandon Marsh would be brutal. I'm convinced he'll play gold glove level defense in the corners and go 20/20. I think he'll be a borderline all-star and will be major league ready by his 22nd birthday.
