We felt he hit poorly because he was platooned and not getting regular playing time.  He started out last year on fire hitting over .400 and then all of a sudden the platoon started and Pennington got starts over him and his confidence was gone and so was his bat.

Scioscia has some kind of weird obsession with platoons, I mean he didn't even test Cowart against lefties to see if he can hit them before he pigeonholed him into a platoon role and now he's doing the same with Ohtani.

Go look at his game logs.  Cowart played almost every game for about a month straight in July and early August.

Which begs the question, WHY DOESN'T HE BUNT against the shift at this point?!?!?!  Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result.  He's literally got nothing to lose at this point.

He most likely would miss twice and then be in an 0-2 hole. In other words, he doesn’t know how to.

Valbuena did it at least twice for hits in Spring Training, maybe he could help with his technique.

I love how quick clod turns on a guy.  He’d rather pay the guy and release him to bring up a younger guy who costs less and will probably provide the same level of performance once you include offense and defense.

exactly, you have to factor in the opportunity cost of his replacement/s.

To get an established replacement would cost $5M+, if you want minimum wage guys the situation could turn into a merry go round like LF and 2B were in 2015/16. Remember Matt Joyce, Daniel Robertson, David De Jesus, Colin Cowgill, Shane Victorino, David Murphy, Kirk Nieuwenhius, Alfredo Marte, Craig Gentry, Daniel Nava, Ji Man Choi? That's just LF from 2015/16.

People said blah blah, we'll compete one of them will win the job and that will be that. It was a terrible situation, Calhoun is only 30 and his potential upside and ability to rebound * chance it happens is by the FO's calculation higher than the chance a bunch of $500K career journeymen's suddenly start hitting once called up.

If there was a perfect scenario to replace him like Adell/Marsh being at least at AA knocking on the door, maybe you DFA Young, call one of them up, and see what happens in a month or two w/ them sharing time to start.

But as it is, Calhoun will probably be out there until at least the deadline, where they might snag a rental to finish out the year/playoffs if this continues.

If we don't have one single guy who can play right field in the entire organization who can put up a WAR better than -0.8 in a month, we might as well blow it up and start over.

We do not have a right fielder in our entire organization who right now has as much upside as Kole Calhoun. Nor do we have a right fielder in our entire organization who can go back in time and undo Kole’s negative WAR so far this season.

Gonna need a ruling on this one. @EnglishCop?

Yes, considering the revenue it is.

My point is that we are already financially obligated to Calhoun so he’s not going anywhere anytime soon. If he was making Espinosa type money he would’ve already packed his bags. It’s a business decision.

Switch your "nor" and "now", and insert comma after Calhoun, and you're good to go!

This is not true.

Then you can't complain about any player on the roster, since we are financially obligated to all of them.

The same would have applied to players such as Wells, GMJ, Hamilton, Finley, etc.

It's a weak excuse in this instance. If you can't find fault for running a player who is having as shit-tastic a season as Calhoun out on the field almost every day, then nobody deserves to benched.

Ted Williams would have agreed.
