OC Register: Angels place Nick Tropeano on the DL because of a sore shoulder, and to give him ‘a little blow’

ANAHEIM — Nick Tropeano is the latest Angels pitcher to be hurt.

Sort of.

The Angels placed Tropeano on the 10-day disabled list on Wednesday with shoulder inflammation after Tropeano said he’d felt a little nagging tightness for a while.

In describing the injury, though, Tropeano repeatedly referred to the off-day coming up on Monday and how the Angels “think this is just a good time to give me a little blow.”

A day after throwing 88 pitches in a scoreless outing, Tropeano said he did not undergo an MRI exam. He said he is “100 percent” certain that he’ll be able to start again as soon as the 10 days are up, which would be May 12. Tropeano played light catch on Wednesday.

“I’m not shutting anything down,” Tropeano said. “I feel you get more locked up if you shut it down. I’m just going to keep playing light catch, using my recovery days to my advantage to get squeaky clean for my next start.”

Tropeano also said he could start again in four days if the team needed: “If they needed me, I’d do it, but it’s better to be safe than sorry. You don’t want this stemming out to be something more than it is. I’ve got some posterior cuff tightness that could lead to an elbow thing, which we don’t even want to mess with.”

Tropeano is just four starts into his return from Tommy John surgery, which was performed in August 2016. He has a 3.42 ERA so far, with two outings in which he got into the seventh without allowing a run.

“I feel like I’m good to go,” Tropeano said. “They feel this is a good time to give me a little blow, coming back from (surgery). I’ve been racking up a good number of innings between now and spring training. Right now it’s just a little tightness. They want to give me a little blow with an off day coming up, and pick it right back up with that 10th day.”

The Angels’ rotation can get by without Tropeano until then because Jaime Barría will be recalled to start on Thursday.

Garrett Richards and Tyler Skaggs are available to start on Friday and Saturday respectively, in Seattle, on five days rest, although the Angels have not announced their rotation for the weekend.

After Monday’s off day, the Angels have 13 straight games before the next day off.

THE OHTANI PLAN

On the day that Shohei Ohtani was honored with the American League rookie the month award for April, he took another step toward his return to the mound.

Ohtani, who missed his last start because of a mild ankle sprain, threw a light bullpen session on Wednesday. He is scheduled for another, more intense session on Friday, Manager Mike Scioscia said.

Although Scioscia wouldn’t specify the plans beyond that, it stands to reason that the earliest Ohtani could then start would be on Sunday in Seattle. That would follow his normal routine.

If Ohtani pitches this weekend, it means he wouldn’t get to start in any capacity in either of the games on Tuesday and Wednesday at Coors Field in Denver. The Angels can’t use the DH in the National League park, and Scioscia reiterated on Wednesday that Ohtani will not play in the field this season.

ALSO

The Angels recalled infielder Ryan Schimpf to take Tropeano’s roster spot. They will need to make another roster move before Thursday’s game in order to get Barría on the roster.
