OC Register: Angels’ Shohei Ohtani wins AL rookie of the month award

Recommended Posts

Shohei Ohtani’s first month in the major leagues was enough to win him an award, as he was named on Wednesday the winner of the American League rookie of the month for April.

Ohtani, the Angels’ 23-year-old two-way sensation, was 2-1 with a 4.43 ERA in four games as a pitcher, including one memorable game in which he took a perfect game into the seventh inning.

At the plate, Ohtani hit .341 with four homers and 12 RBIs through April, the period covered by the voting. He added a double in four at-bats Tuesday night.

Ohtani missed his last pitching appearance of the month because of a sprained ankle. The Angels are still evaluating when he will be able to take the mound again. They are targeting one of the games this weekend in Seattle, Manager Mike Scioscia said. Because Ohtani still hasn’t thrown a bullpen session since hurting his ankle, he could be pushed back as far as Sunday.
