Angels in the Outfield: Now and in the Future

Recommended Posts

2018: Upton (30), Trout (26), Calhoun (30); 4of - Young (34), Revere (30), Liriano (27), eventually Hermosillo (23)

2019: Upton (31), Trout (27), Calhoun (31); 4of - Hermosillo (24), Lund (24) (Calhoun traded, Herm starter?)

2020: Upton (32), Trout (28), Marsh (22); 4of - Hermosillo (25)/Lund (25)/Adell (21) call-up

2021: Adell (22), Trout (29), Marsh (23); 4of - Hermosillo (26), Deveaux (21) call-up; Upton (33) to DH

Or something like that. Of course we don't know how good players like Deveaux will be, but hopefully it will be a nice problem to eventually have: too many star caliber outfielders.

One change to the 2021 idea, assuming Ohtani is still hitting well 3 years from now: have Upton learn 1B after 2020 season and have a part-timer utility guy who can hit to share DH with Ohtani and also fill in other position(s).

Edit: Thaiss of course could certainly factor in at 1B by then.   Could have Ohtani DH 70-80 games, and have Thaiss and Upton play the other 244-254 games combined between the two positions (1B and DH).

That 2021 team will be incredible.

C - Martin Maldonado

1B - Matt Thaiss

2B - Jahmai Jones

SS - Andrelton Simmons

3B - Kevin Maitan

UT - Leo Rivas

LF - Jo Adell

CF - Mike Trout

RF - Brandon Marsh

DH - Shohei Ohtani and Justin Upton

4 - Michael Hermosillo/Brennon Lund/ Justin Upton

SP: Ohtani, Canning, Barria, Rodriguez, Tropeano, Heaney, Suarez, Soriano, Gatto and whichever collegiate starter we draft in the first round this year.

Yes, agreed, although the big outlier on that list is Maldonado. A solid player, but I'm hoping that in 2021 he's been replaced by whatever collegiate catcher we draft in the first round this year.

I think the majority of us are hoping Trout, Simmons, and Maldonado all extend beyond 2020.  But that said I think you try to groom both Adell and Marsh as CF's and one could play CF if Trout decides he wants to sign elsewhere, with the other one taking a corner OF.

Hopefully Jones, Ward, and Thaiss all stick at their positions and Maitan/Rivas develop and that creates player currency.

Can you imagine the OF depth if Jones had stayed in the OF, or if Ohtani demands to play OF too.

Looks like we'll need to focus more on this pitching staff over the next 5 years.
