The Official 2018 Minor League Statline and Prospect Discussion Thread

Seeing Barash, Briceno, and even Wass advance into upper minors and Pina and Kruger advance out of short season are making the Perez/Graterol transactions and Ward position move make a lot more sense in a larger context. Four of those have drawn praise for their defense and Wass profiles as an offense-first option.

Daniel Procopio pitched two scoreless with 4k but walked two and gave up a hit.  He was dominant as a reliever for Orem last year.  10th round pick in 2017 out of Niagra U.  Entering age 22yo season.  Curious as to what he was hitting on the gun.  If they continue to use him in relief, he could move pretty quick.

Canning maybe top 30 overall MLB prospect by September?    That's some electric stuff and command.

If all goes well, absolutely. That will be his age 23 season. Then he'll be given a full time rotation spot in 2020 during his age 24 season.

Awesome.

Man, we have a ton of legit depth.  Assuming we re-sign Richards, we could potentially have the following depth by the end of next year:

Richards, Ohtani, Heaney, Skaggs, Shoemaker, Barria, Canning, Bridwell, Ramirez, Tropeano, Meyer...

That's 11 legitimate ML pitchers!

11 bodies but really the equivalent of like 6.5 pitchers after they drop like flies.

Good enough :P

That's how teams should be built these days.  Pitchers get hurt all the time, so you need a lot of solid quality depth to absorb the rigors of a 162 season.  Rest your top pitchers enough, have them pitch maybe 150-160 innings in the regular season, then rely on them more heavily come postseason.  We don't need starters to go 200+ innings during the season.

I agree. The depth is nice.

Yessir!  I am all for the Angels skipping a few of Ohtani's starts along the way this year.  Ideally, I'd like to keep him around 130-135ish during the season, with the ability to have him pitch about 20 or so more innings in the postseason.  You know, when we win the World Series and all ;)

What's a realistic timeline for Canning?  Might we see him in the rotation as early as the end of next season?

I hear he can move quickly much like Prior, Price & Verlander
