Angels Sign OF Chris Young to a one-year deal

So what I saw a couple days ago wound up being true. Appears to be a major-league deal and would be our 4th OF. Fletcher also adds it's a major-league deal.

Today, the #Angels agreed to terms on a one-year contract with OF Chris Young and a minor league contract with an invite to Spring Training with INF Chris Carter.

Good call tots.  I saw where you mentioned Young as a 4th OF option.  He’s a pretty good one.

He plays center?

Yes - he usually hits well against lefties too, so some Calhoun insurance there. Wouldn't be surprised if they dabble with him on the 1B depth chart too. He has the height (6'2") and potential athleticism to get by there.

He was one of Eppler's success stories with the Yanks, a bounce-back player he identified as being a good add on the cheap. He gave NYY 163 games and a .257/.326/.465/.792 slash with 116 OPS+, 28 doubles, 17 homers, and 2.1 WAR.

He had a down year last year, but if he can re-capture some of his 2016 form, then he'd be a decent backup.  He doesn't play CF anymore though it appears, so I am just lukewarm on this move.

He didn't play CF last year because he never really had to...he's definitely capable still. Hopefully he doesn't have to often.

If you look at those defensive stats for him in CF, they are quite.. ugly, to say the least, haha.  But yeah, that said, if he has to play any meaningful amount of innings in CF, then we are in a ton of trouble (as it means Trout is out).  So hopefully... just a handful of games out there at most.

So the Angels line-up is currently...
Kinsler 2B, Calhoun RF, Trout CF, Upton LF, Pujols DH, Cozart 3B, Simmons SS, 1B Valbuena, C Maldonado

And bench...
Rivera C, Chris Young OF, and room for an infielder, be it a FA/trade or Cowart, Marte, Fernandez, Walsh, Carter

Yup, that's how I see it, although I think Valbuena bats higher than 8th.  I imagine we open with both Marte and Cowart on the roster, with Cowart being optioned back to the minors when we need our 6th starter.

That's when I think they'd tap into AAA for Hermosillo, Liriano, or Eric Young.
I'm actually liking Young as someone to take away some ABs from Calhoun against lefties more than anything.

Eh wasn't really lining it up as a batting order. There's all sorts of permutations actually..
Could see Kinsler, Cozart, Calhoun, and Simmons all getting ABs at #1-#2, or Trout hitting second. Simmons could hit 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th....the line-up is actually deep enough, especially if Cozart, Kinsler, Calhoun, and Ohtani all hit.

Yeah, that's a good point.  Depth is certainly a good thing.  Hermosillo is probably the long-term play for the 4th OF spot, but for now, best to give him more reps in AAA to work on his game.

He can play CF and he is cheap. Basically replaces Eric Young Jr. who is still in the org as he signed a minor league deal. Valbuena or Cowart can play some corner OF if necessary.

Its likely our bench will consist of these ee eleven guys in different arrangements over the course of the season.

Valbuena (he's a part time starter but will be on bench sometimes)

Cowart

Rivera

Young, C

Young, E

Liriano

Fernandez

Hermosillio

Graterol

Marte

Fontana

And Thaiss and Ward are possible Sept. Call up's

I feel like we should keep an eye on how the spring plays out for guys like Josh Harrison, Chase Headley, Asdrubal Cabrera, Brad Miller, Jose Pirela, Derek Dietrich...

I can see Eppler springing for an older 'vet' type for the last bench spot with some utility and versatility in their game. We may have Carlos Perez, Jose Alvarez, some other depthy pitchers to play with as out-of-options trade bait for an expensive vet being squeezed off a rebuilding team. A Carlos Perez + Jose Alvarez (clearing room for Krol and ~$1m) for Headley and maybe some cash could be a sort of deal that happens.

Not advocating that specifically, but I could see them treating it as a vet filler for a couple months instead of banking on Cowart right at the start of the season. It'd be a little more about us finding a use for out-of-options Perez than it would be us wanting a Headley-type player.

I'd hang onto Jose Alvarez.  Not that he's that good or anything, but he truly the only lefty reliever we have right now.  Perez, though, is as good as gone.  No options left and definitely no space on our 40-man roster to accommodate him.

I think Marte is as good as gone also.

I could see us trading for a Josh Harrison type.  I could see us moving Valbuena for him.  We take more money over three years they take our one year of Valbuena.

Valbuena doesn't have much of a place in PIT - Freese is their back-up 1B/3B. He isn't going to displace Bell or Moran at 1B or 3B. They have Sean-Rod and Adam Frazier both playing every position imaginable too.

I really don't think Valbuena is going anywhere, especially with 4th OF locked up as another right-handed hitter and Cron gone. Valbuena had more power than just about every Angel last year except Trout. Between hitting left-handed, fitting a need, and being so heavy on power/BB%, he makes sense on an Eppler club.

Yea I was just more looking at a type of deal.  I’m not too familiar with Pittsburgh.

It'd only be if Krol or Lamb impress enough to bump him for ~$1m less. Wouldn't surprise me if Cron's return was a left-handed pitcher too since Tampa is stocked with them.

Robbie Ross, Kevin Siegrist, and Francisco Liriano are all FA's still too and I could see Eppler being interested in Ross' youth and utility, Liriano's veteran-ness and ability to spot-start or pitch multiple innings, and Siegrist's ceiling.
