OC Register: Angels Notes: Six-man rotation plans remain flexible

TEMPE, Ariz. — The Angels’ six-man rotation plan remains subject to change.

General Manager Billy Eppler said on Thursday morning that, even though the Angels seem to be headed toward a six-man rotation, there are still plenty of factors that could result in changes throughout the year.

“The flexibility aspect of this is really, really important,” Eppler said, “and the communication between the pitchers, the performance staff and the coaches. The chain of connectivity is really important, so if a pitcher wants an extra day, we’ll have the ability to give him an extra day.”

Eppler said the pitchers will prepare in the spring on a normal five-day rotation, and then they can add an extra day during the season when possible, or necessary.

“Some of our pitchers who are accustomed to pitching on five days might still pitch on five days during the season,” he said.

The Angels might even juggle the order of the pitchers regularly so that some pitchers are working on four-, five- or even six days rest on the same trip through the order.

Right-hander Dayan Diaz and catcher Francisco Arcia have both been delayed by visa issues, Eppler said. Diaz is Colombian and Arcia is Venezuelan. …

JC Ramirez said he felt good after his last bullpen session. He said he’s expecting to have an up-down session, simulating two innings, on Friday, and then face hitters next week. Ramirez is coming back from having stem-cell treatment to repair a damaged ulnar collateral ligament.

This tells me that they may not have six pitchers.

They have 10 guys who can put up a 4.50 ERA or better, given a regular rotation spot. Ohtani, Richards, Skaggs, Heaney, Shoemaker, Tropeano, Bridwell, Ramirez, Barria, Scribner. This is why they haven't added anyone, except Ohtani. They could've grabbed Santiago for instance as he went back to the White Sox on a minor league deal. So they are confident in who they have.

I think it will be a 5.5 man rotation with the top 8 guys there all getting starts. Ohtani likely gets more rest between starts than say Richards.

Players don't care about who pitches before and after, I mean, they just like knowing when they will start so they can get in a routine.
