How free agency has changed

So I’m looking at Vlad’s career numbers and I am thinking about free agency the last few years.  When Vlad left the Angels he had just finished his age 34 season.  He had only played 100 games that last year and while he wasn’t great he was still productive.  He hit .295, OPS of .794, and he was only a year removed from being a 130 OPS+ player.  He was considered a hall of fame caliber player.  I find it hard to believe that after he left he got only a one year contract with Texas.  That year with Texas (his age 35 season), he hit .300 with 29 homers an OPS of .841.  He then got another one year contract.  If a player today had these kinds of numbers they would have had three year contract offers.  I find it strange he was done so young, while still being productive.

He was having physical problems his last season with the Angels and it showed in his running. All those turf years were catching up with him. Even still the Rangers got Vlad for pennies on the dollar and the Angels certainly should have kept him for that price.

Tough to argue against this.  He was still very productive.

I thought he played 2 in texas? From what i remember he wanted 2 years and the angels only wanted to give him 1, so texas swooped in?

I don't remember his free agent market at that time but there could have been an overabundance of outfielders available that drove down his years and price as well (this is just speculation but it might have been a contributing factor). Perhaps aging curves weren't as clearly understood at that time as well?

I agree that you'd think he would have gotten a multi-year deal even if it was only 2 years at that time. Peculiar.

No, only one. Crazy huh?

Dont know how i missed that. Even more of a slap in the face that we could have resigned him for 1.

I know arlington helped, but he crushed with texas that year. I went to the all star game, was weird seeing him in a rangers uni playing in anaheim (and people cheering)
