Fifty years ago today...

Fifty years ago today, I along with my dad, his neighbor the previous year+ and his son, all were on a rented boat that went out with many other boats to watch the Queen Mary come in to LB port.   That was awesome, even as an 11 year-old, to see.

And later that same day, Rams vs Packers on the radio, Rams block the punt with 45 sec left and return it to the 5 yard line.   Gabriel hits Casey for the winner, and Enberg yells “The Rams are jumping up and down like 13 year-olds”.   Rams went on to clobber the Colts 34-10 the following week to win their first divisional title in 12 years.

Well, 1967 anyway, as back then NFL post-season home field advantage wasn't determined by record.   The Rams were 11-1-2, and the Packers were something like 10-3-1 but got to host the Rams and beat them on a real cold day 28-7 (week before the Ice Bowl).

It has crossed my mind about the 1977 post-season loss at home to the Vikings in the pouring El Nino rain.    That was one ugly game.

Vikings were the better team in 1969 and 1976.   Rams started off 11-0 in 1969, but many wins were closer than expected.   May have been fools gold.

my first football game was in '69, rams vs. colts at the colisseum. rumor was it might be johnny unitas' last game (it wasn't). classic game. rams ended that season on a 3 game losing streak and washed out in the playoffs (i think it was the game where joe kapp hurdled a tackler, which was illegal, but they never threw a flag on the play, and the vikings scored and ended up winning).

Yep, they lost to Minnesota (only 1 loss for Vikings then) in a close game to stop the 11 game winning streak, then were shutout and hammered by the meh Lions, and finally in the game you attended to close the regular season the Colts won a low scoring emotionless game.

And yep, Kapp got away with an at the time illegal hurdling of a defensive player.   But the Vikings were truly the better team that year.

Amazing that 45 years later, the Dolphins perfect 1972 season through the Super Bowl is still the only one so far in NFL history

I remember being so happy that they managed to get home field for the 77 playoffs after having watched them get beat up in the Minnesota weather during the previous playoffs.  What a let down to have the California weather spoil it.

Oh so sweet though to finally crush the Vikings at home in the 1978 post-season to end that jinx

Alas, Dallas had to spoil that with the 28-0 NFC title win the next Sunday at the Coliseum.   And it was even worse having to be subjected to Hollywood Henderson dunking the ball over the goalpost after returning the INT for a score.
