Here's a thought (more Ohtani repurcussions)

Right now who doesn't want to play for the Angels? They've got the best player in baseball, the best Japanese player, and an obviously savvy GM. Not to mention Simmons, a rising farm system, even an old Pujols as elder statesman.

Ohtani has enormously increased the franchises sex appeal. It may be the single biggest positive move the team has done--other than drafting Trout--in years, if not decades, if not all of franchise history. Certainly Vlad's impact was huge, there have been other positive moves, but this one is huge - and not just because of the numbers Ohtani will probably/hopefully put up.

As I said elsewhere, it also probably improves the chances that Trout will stick around.

But the most important thing: it can be a snowball effect: Sign Ohtani, which leads to other players signing for discounts (Darvish? Moustakas?) which leads to Trout staying, etc.

Eppler is awesome.

Please just stop with the Stanton fantasy. I would much rather have a complete team rather than blow the rest if the payroll on one player.

The Angels need a second baseman and one that doesn't suck. That will cost something of value in either trade chips or free agency money.

They could use a solid third baseman which is the exact same scenario as above.

Both are affordable if the Angels don't waste those resources on Stanton to supplant Calhoun.

The economics of team building is two fold, resources spent and total value recieved. Stanton alone does not equal the value of Calhoun in right with player upgrades x and y in the infield holes over what we have currently and what we need to do three years from now which would be extensions for Trout and Simmons.

Don't cock block the future with your fantasy lineup, please.

Right on Blarg.  There is no reason now to spend on someone like Stanton.  We need more depth, and that means filling several holes and contingencies.  Besides addressing the infield (and that is an extremely high priority), there is the matter of rebuilding the bullpen after Petit's departure.  I think Billy will also continue to address the farm situation, and we are likely to see even more strength built up there as well.  I was confident with Eppler before Ohtani, now he has totally convinced me that he gets it, and most importantly he's demonstrated that he knows how to close in player personnel decisions.  We have a strong organization and coaching staff, people just need to believe and give it a little more time to develop.

Id love Stanton. It would be as big of a shock as Pujols (with maybe the headache), and would be the coolest combo (trout/stanton) this team has ever had by far, and likely a historic one.

But trading for hernandez and signing moustakas would do far more for the team. If we do those two things, or something similar, this would be the best offseason since the vlad/esco/colon/guillen one.

Darvish is not coming to the Angels any more.  One of Ohtani's rumored requirements was that he wanted to go to a team with no Japanese presence.  Which is kind of why the Padres suddenly popped up.  It would be an absolute slap in the face if the first thing Eppler did after reeling in the big fish was to then add another Japanese star.

Obviously this would have been something already discussed with Ohtani if the Angels sign Darvish

I can't take any of those Ohtani rumors serious anymore. Certainly might be true but could very well be a load of BS too.

Again, for all we know it's the exact opposite and the Angels are intent on getting Ohtani's idol and that's what brought him here and that is what triggered the reports of there being a 'deal in place before a decision was made'.

I don't think that's very likely but anything can happen at this point.

I thought it was more that he didn't want to come to a place with a Japanese legacy - that he wanted to create his own. Bringing Darvish in might soften that slightly, but I think Ohtani would still be able to lead the way.

I haven't really understood why this rumor persists. In his 60 minutes interview with Morosi (find it on youtube), Ohtani says pretty explicitly that Darvish has had a huge influence on him and that he would enjoy playing with him. He also makes it clear that he'd enjoy playing on different teams too because he'd like to be able to face him. Not sure I buy this prevailing rumor.

Hadn’t heard this. Makes me appreciate this kid that much more.
