What exactly is a "good baseball mind", baseball is not exactly brain surgery or any other endeavor that requires a heavy dose of education, scientific knowledge, or extensive research.  Insightful commentary comes from having good sources of information, and a willingness to disclose information and speculate about it.  I'm curious because it's interesting about how people view the potential capabilities of who gets hired for a GM position, manager or coach.  I wouldn't have a clue about how to interview or evaluate Aaron Boone for a managerial position.

I just appreciated his insights during the playoff and World Series broadcasts. Strategy, players' strengths/weaknesses, etc. He just seems to hit the right chords.

Joe McCarthy was called by some a "push-button manager" who had the benefit of great players and didn't need to do much in the way of strategy. He was also a man with a warm and friendly personality who got along with his players.

McCarthy ended up doing a pretty decent job with the Yankees. Eight pennants and seven WS titles with the team.
