OC Register: Angels acquire closer Jim Johnson from Braves

The Angels bolstered their bullpen by acquiring veteran closer Jim Johnson from the Atlanta Braves on Thursday in exchange for a lightly regarded minor league pitcher.

Johnson, 34, was an All-Star in 2012, his first of back-to-back 50-save seasons with the Baltimore Orioles. Last year he saved 20 games while posting a 3.06 ERA with the Braves.

It’s unclear if the Angels plan to anoint him their closer immediately. The Angels also have Blake Parker and Cam Bedrosian, who have had stints at closer.

Johnson is signed for one more season, at a salary of $5 million.

The cost for Johnson was left-hander Justin Kelly, the Angels’ 33rd-round pick in 2016. Kelly had a 4.59 ERA in two seasons in the Angels system. He was not among their top 30 prospects, according to MLB.com.

The Angels also acquired $1.21 million in international pool space from the Braves. The Angels had used nearly all of their allotment for this international signing period.

Although the extra money could be used to sign Shohei Ohtani, it’s more likely that they are targeting one of the 12 minor leaguers who recently became free agents as a result of the Braves violation of international signing rules.

More to come on this story.
