IGNORED

Obviously we will win the protest...

Can someone explain what happened? I wasn't able to start watching the game until the 8th inning.

Bo Porter (the Astros manager)) went to the bullpen. The lefty reliever came out and started warming up. Then Scioscia announced a righty pinch-hitter. Once he did that, Bo Porter went back to the bullpen and brought out a righty reliever. Scioscia had to counter by then bringing in a lefty PH. The first reliever should have had to face at least one batter unless he was somehow injured. The umps allowed it and Scioscia was forced to protest the game. It was one of the weirdest things I've seen on a baseball field in awhile. It's like the umps were calling a little league game. They had no clue. Really strange.

The link below has a video clip of both TV and radio broadcasts during the madness. http://nesn.com/2013/05/umpires-for-angels-astros-dont-know-mlb-rule-allow-consecutive-pitching-changes-video/

In the article it says that after the game, Bo Porter said that he believes the rules state that even though the reliever that he just brought in hadn't pitched to a batter yet, after a pinch-hitter comes out, he's allowed to make another pitching change.

How is this guy a MLB manager? Mind-boggling. What's even more insane is that all four umps allowed it to happen. It's like a Twilight Zone episode.

Bo Porter and the 4 umps are total imbeciles, if they don't know one of the basic rules in MLB.

I'm also guessing the 4 imbeciles (err umps) will never explain in public why they did what they did.

The umps' union is too strong.   I do wonder how much accountability there is with umps.

Rule 3.05b

If the pitcher is replaced, the substitute pitcher shall pitch to the batter then at bat, or any substitute batter, until such batter is put out or reaches first base, or until the offensive team is put out, unless the substitute pitcher sustains injury or illness which, in the umpire-in-chief's judgment, incapacitates him for further play as a pitcher.

MLB Network is reporting that all four umpires are being fined, and the crew chief is also being suspended.

That is great news. I would like to hear from the crew chief as to why they thought it was within the rules.

Fieldin Culbreth (crew chief) being suspended two games and received a fine. The other three umpires (Brian O'Nora, Bill Welke, Adrian Johnson) received fines.

MLB (and Joe Torre) WILL act when there has been an obvious rule violation, which this clearly was.

In other words, the pitcher not only has to pitch to the hitter, he has to complete the at-bat unless he is injured or the other side is retired through some other means (caught stealing, etc.).
