This is the quandry the angels are in.  If you sign two FA pitchers next season those two will take two of the five spots in the rotation and probably dont have the upside that Richards, Heaney, and Skaggs has.  Best case scenario is that the the two free agent pitchers are comparable to Shoemaker, and Tropeano.  What happens if everyone is healthy? The Free agents will be expensive and be tied up for multiple years. Two of those five will have to be released or traded.

Now granted i agree with you that all being healthy is unlikely.

There aren't many free agent pitchers who are difference-makers this off-season, aside from maybe Lance Lynn.

Agreed but He's 34 years old though. His ERA since his age 31 season is 5.10. He's not the pitcher he was from 27-30

Exactly. I don't give a rat's ass what he did in 2008. Since 2014, his era is over 5 and his whip is 1.42

Why people continue to try and convince everyone that he isn't terrible is baffling

Unfortunately they have to sign one of those guys. I'd go with Arrieta, since they're all gonna get a fuckton of money anyway.

have we reached a point where possibly signing a pitcher like arrieta is seen as "oh well, might as well. whatever." kind of thing?

I always kinda figured if that is how it goes, you use whatever pitching you don't want for depth to trade for solid field pieces/high end prospects. You run the risk of losing good young pitching talent, but... That's baseball. You tie up a lot of money, but theoretically you have a lot of talent, and the ability to trade for more.

You mean a 3.48 era (125 ops+) and a whip of 1.198 actually sounds ok to you?

Is he an innings eater? I hear that's important

If Richards, Heaney, Skaggs, and Shoemaker can come back healthy, Tropeano can recover, Barria can come up and be successful, Jimmy Hoffa's body gets found, Hillary Clinton becomes president, and ANAHEIMBOB makes an intelligent post, we should be in good shape.

It was an absolute lock until the last one

All your points are very realistic........with the exception of the last one.
